Musica Viva Chamber Music Recital at PC
Musica Viva, the Central Valley’s premiere Chamber Music Ensemble, returns to Porterville College at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 17 in room CA-2, presenting the first in their 2017-18 series — a program of music for violin and violoncello. There is no admission charge, but donations are accepted to defray the artists’ expenses, and parking is free for these events.
According to cellist Dieter Wulfhorst, “Musical Miniatures from Around the World” is the title of the program, featuring wonderful musical selections from ten countries written or arranged specifically for violin and cello. This program is very suitable for all ages, young and old alike, intellectually stimulating and also pure joy and enthusiasm. We cordially invite you to participate in this event with us.”
He continued, “We have been so fortunate to have developed a following in the Porterville area, having performed a dozen or more times at Porterville College during the past several years.”
Consisting of players Susan Doering (violin) and Wulfhorst (cello), Musica Viva can expand to include other players needed to complete a particular chamber ensemble. Later this year, the ensemble plans to perform works with double bass player Heidi Franklin, and also a program with Colorado flutist Shelley Mann.
“And we are planning to perform yet another Super Bowl Alternative Concert in Porterville on Feb. 4 (their seventh annual),” Wulfhorst added.
Both Doering and Wulfhorst are very active in Central Valley music — both serve on the music faculty at Fresno Pacific University, and both play in the major orchestras of our area. Doering serves as concertmaster of the Sequoia (Tulare County) Symphony; Wulfhorst is principal cellist of the Bakersfield Symphony, and both play regularly with other regional orchestras.
