Spartans, Grizzlies girls tennis advance to Area

Strathmore High School’s doubles team of Arelli Adams and Zoe Vasquez and Granite Hills’ Kellyann Whited advanced to Area play after placing third and sixth place, respective­ly, at the two-day East Sequoia League girls tennis championsh­ip at Sierra Pacific High School on Friday in Hanford.

Seeded fifth to start the tournament Thursday, Adams and Vasquez defeated Orosi’s Vanessa Soto and Beatriz Leon 6-3, 6-1. In the quarterfin­als the duo lost the first set 6-2 to fourth-seeded Mabel Zamora and Maria Contreras of Corcoran, but came back to win the next one 6-4 and the tiebreaker 10-7. On Friday, Adams and Vasquez lost to top-seeded Briana Guerra and Sierra Bolanos of Woodlake 6-2, 6-2. They bounced back to win the third-place match 6-4,6-2 against sixth-seeded Almarely Campuzano and Jasmin Andrada of Orosi.

Entering the playoffs as the fifth-seeded singles player, Whited defeated Strathmore’s Ariana Mata 6-4, 6-2 before falling to fourth-seeded Maggie Arrellano of Corcoran 6-2, 6-1. In the quarterfin­als, Whited beat eighth-seeded Michelle Castro of Orange Cove 6-3, 6-3, but lost to sixth-seeded Gabriela Aguilar to place sixth overall in the tournament.

The Granite Hills team will also advance to the next round.

“We’re excited to be advancing as a team and for Kellyann as an individual playing singles,” GHHS head coach Shelly Lozano said.

FOOTBALL Strathmore 42 Sierra Pacific 0

Strathmore High School football continues to roll through the East Sequoia League. The Spartans blanked Sierra Pacific 42-0 on the road Friday night to remain unbeaten on the season.

Strathmore (7-0, 2-0 ESL) jumped out 21-0 halftime lead, scoring a touchdown in the first quarter and two in the second. The Spartans added two more touchdowns in the third quarter and wrapped up the scoring with a TD in the fourth quarter.

It was the first shutout of the season for the Strathmore defense, which has allowed just 14 points in two league games.

Senior running back Joseph Garcia rushed for three touchdowns. He scored what turned out to be the game-winning points with a 10yard rushing TD with 3 minutes to go in the first quarter.

Midway through the second quarter, he broke free for a 27-yard rushing touchdown. He plunged across the goal line from 3-yards out to give SHS a 28-0 lead early in the third quarter.

Garcia finished with 156 yards on 22 carries. He also had six tackles, two sacks and intercepti­on on defense.

Fabian Alcantar added a 61-yard rushing TD in the second quarter. He had 156 yards on four carries.

Strathmore quarterbac­k Nick Salas tossed a 21-yard scoring strike to Andres Lara in the third quarter.

Alonso Acevedo, who had nine carries for 106 yards, added a 13-yard rushing touchdown for SHS.

Osvaldo Ibarra connected on all six extra points.

Next Strathmore, the No. 1 ranked team in CIF Central Section Division VI, hosts No. 3 Granite Hills (7-0, 2-0) on Oct. 20 at Spartan Stadium.

GIRLS WATER POLO Marauders 2-1 in Turlock tournament

Monache won its first three games on Friday in the two-day Western States Girls Water Polo Tournament in Turlock.

The Marauders defeated Downey of Modesto 17-4 and Clayton Valley Charter of Concord 8-2, but lost their final game of the day 8-6 to Valley Christian of San Jose.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL Strathmore 3 Woodlake 1

Strathmore’s Isabella Galang finished with 40 assists, 16 digs, and four kills in the Spartans 3-1 defeat of Woodlake in Thursday’s East Sequoia League home volleyball game.

Emily Kissick had 21 digs and 15 kills while Lucy Bennett had 14 kills and one solo block for the Spartans. Monache 3 Mt. Whitney 0

Monache’s Andrea Lopez led the team with 14 kills, 13 digs, four aces and three blocks in the Marauders 3-0 victory over Mt. Whitney at home in Thursday’s nonleague game.

Hailey Kelley finished with 13 kills and Madisyn Baxter with 10 for MHS. Gabby Cox had 42 assists, Brianna Johnson had 12 digs and Taylor Chavez had three aces.
