The Strathmore High School girls water polo team lost their first East Sequoia League game 8-7 in overtime to Sierra Pacific Monday evening.

Entering the fourth quarter with a 7-5 lead, the Spartans (16-6, 6-1 ESL) failed to score and gave up two goals to the Golden Bears (15-6, 5-1 ESL) that tied the game at 7. Taking advantage of Strathmore’s miscues and lack of attempts to score, Sierra Pacific only needed one score in the first half of overtime to down the defending Esl-champion Spartans 8-7 and get a chance at a share of the ESL title.

Strathmore jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first quarter thanks to goals from Hannah Hartsell, Madison Bower, Paulina Cemo and Sam Dieterle. Bower and Dieterle scored two more goals in the second quarter, while Dieterle’s lone goal in the third was the final score from the Spartans.

Bower led the team in steals with four while Hartsell and Aimee Alarcon had three apiece. Alex Huth and Felicity Wynn also had two steals while Hartsell, Bower, Alarcon, Cemo and Dieterle each had one assist. Wynn finished with nine saves in the goal.

Hailey Mcgaha led the Golden Bears with four goals. Teammate Victoria Blanchard had three and Vanessa Lloyd finished with one.
