Marauders finish second in EYL

-

The Monache High School girls golf team won their final East Yosemite League with a team score of 539 at Tuesday’s 18-hole match in Tulare but unfortunately fell short of winning the EYL title and finished second in the league. Tulare Western took second place at the match and won the EYL title.

For Monache, Abby Choi shot a 98 and took third place while Katelyn Choi carded a 104 and took sixth place. Sandra Renteria shot a 111, Danielle Margosian carded a 109 and Vannessa Mendoza shot a 117.

“The girls played really well,” MHS head coach Dave Koontz said. “I was really proud of them and we did everything we could do. We went over there to win it, and we did. We just came up a little bit short.”

Porterville finished fifth in the tournament with a score of 615 and placed fifth in EYL. We were fifth in the tournament and finished fifth overall.

Julia Hunter shot a 100 and was fourth overall. Hunter was one of the two girls who carded a birdie. Angela Eugene shot a 108, Aunika Marquez a 121, Uniese Carrillo a 141, Dora Jimenez a 145 and Vashti Guzman a 187.

“I have been extremely excited about the way the girls have improved this year,” PHS head coach David Herrera said. “I couldn’t have asked for more from this group of girls. Half

of this team has been playing for two years and the other half of the team started two and a half months ago. We will be returning all but Julia and Vashti. Good things are coming for Porterville High Girls golf.”

Spartans take second, SHS Larson advances

Strathmore freshman Anushka Larson was the only girls golfer to advance to Valley individual play after carding a 91 at Monday’s East Sequoia League 18hole championship meet at the Lemoore Golf Course.

Sierra placed first at the meet with a score of 563 and advances to the Valley team playoffs as

the ESL representative. Strathmore placed second with a team score of 651 and Lindsay finished third with 714. Granite Hills did not bring their team to the championship meet.

Larson was the meet’s low medalist while second, third, fifth and sixth place went to golfers from Sierra Pacific. Lindsay’s Natalie Feliz shot a 111 to take fourth place.

“I am thrilled with how the team has improved from the beginning of the season to league finals,” SHS head coach Norm Campbell said. “Second place is our highest finish in over 5 years and the first time we have had an individual golfer move on to Valley during that time period. The team and I are already excited about the potential for

next season as we only graduate one senior.”
