Lindsay Art Association is hosting its fifth annual Dia de Los Muertos (Day Of the Dead) exhibit at the Lindsay Museum/ Gallery located at 165 N. Gale Hill.

The exhibit opens on Friday, Oct. 27 and will run through Sunday, Nov. 5. Lindsay Museum/gallery is open Fridays and Sundays from 12-4 p.m.

A reception will be held on Sunday, Oct. 29 from 3-5 p.m.

Traditional pan de Muerto (Mexican sweet bread), hot chocolate and fruit will be served. Music will be provided by Lindsay High School honor guitar group.

Most altars, paintings, papel picado, painted skulls, flowers and prints are created by the LHS fine arts department learners and some community members.

Dia de Los Muertos is one of Mexico’s traditional holidays, reuniting and honoring beloved ancestors, family and friends.

It is a tradition that commemorates the indigenous belief that

once a year, on Nov. 1 and 2, the departed could return to earth to visit. So believers create altars in their homes, graveyards and galleries bearing traditional and personal items to welcome them back.

The traditional altar contains the following items: a photo (of the person), water, candles, flowers (marigolds), a special sweet bread (pan de Muerto) and incense (copal). The altar has three tiers. Some altars are elaborate and some very simple. An altar usually reflects the person’s personality and character and shares the story of their life with the viewer.
