SATURDAY Free pickelball lessons offered on Saturdays in October at

Zalud Park. Considered one of the fastest-growing sports in the United States, pickleball now has an outdoor facility in Portervill­e. One of the two tennis courts at Zalud Park was converted to accommodat­e pickleball, with open play taking place on Saturdays or by appointmen­t. Haven’t played the sport yet? No problem. A local pickleball enthusiast has volunteere­d his time and talent to help promote the game. He will be on hand to demonstrat­e and teach pickleball for the next two Saturdays, Oct. 21 and 28, starting at 9 a.m. The lessons are completely free and all the equipment will be provided. Pickleball is a lowimpact paddle sport that is easy to learn and play. It is traditiona­lly played on a badminton- sized court with special paddles and perforated balls that are slightly smaller than a whiffle ball. Created for all ages and skill levels, the simple rules of the game make it easy for beginners to learn, yet fast-paced and competitiv­e for more advanced players. Lindsay Night Market has started for the 2017 season, and will continue through the fall. The market is held each Friday from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. in downtown Lindsay. It features food, vendors and other activities.

Main Street concert series is held each Friday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Centennial Park across from City Hall. The concerts, which feature local talent, are free. Attendees are advised to bring a lawn chair or blanket.

Portervill­e Elks Lodge TGIF dinner is served at 6:30 p.m. every Friday at the lodge on the corner of Main Street and Morton Avenue. The first Friday of the month is steak night. Cost varies. Public welcome. For more informatio­n, call 784-1342.

The Barn Theater will be presenting “The Complete History of America (abridged)” through Oct. 28. SATURDAY The 72nd Veteran’s Homecoming Queen Pageant takes place at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28, at the Portervill­e Memorial Auditorium, 415 W. Olive Ave. Admission is free.seven young women are vying for the title of Veteran’s Homecoming Queen this year. The queen and her court will reign over the annual Veterans Day events, including the Veterans Memorial Service, the Veterans Day Parade and Band-a-rama, then serve as Miss Portervill­e until next year’s pageant. The seven entrants will be judged for their talent, their essay, their poise and personalit­y, and during an interview with judges. This year’s pageant is under the first-year direction of Emmylou Dowling, who was Homecoming Queen in 2008. This year’s parade will fall on Saturday, Nov. 11 and parade entry forms are still being accepted, said longtime parade chairman Ed Flory. This month the Tulare County branch libraries will be offering craft sessions on bookmarks, owls, pumpkins, and the Tic Tac Toe game. The schedule is as follows:

Trick or treat at one of Portervill­e’s most infamous locations. The beloved garden at the historical Zalud House Museum will be transforme­d into spooky Halloween fun that the entire family can enjoy. Take the path through the ghoulish garden and collect candy along the way. The garden is free to enter and will be open to visitors on Oct. 27 and 28 from 7 to 9 p.m. There will also be special ghost-telling museum tours taking place those nights. Tour the house with a donation of only $3 for adults and $1 for children. Don’t miss out, it’s going to be a frightfull­y good time!

The St. Anne’s Parish of the Knights of Columbus is hosting a Halloween Casino Night fundraiser at Eagle Mountain Casino on Thursday. The event will start at Giovanni Pizzeria and Arcade at 5 p.m. with registrati­on, hospitalit­y hour, drinks and appetizers. Bus leaves for the casino at 6 p.m. The bus will leave the casino for the return trip to Giovanni’s at 10 p.m. The cost is $25 per person and all tickets can be purchased prior to the day of the event from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Alterra Home Loans, 881 W. Morton Ave., Suite C, in Portervill­e. All proceeds go toward Knights of Columbus charities which include St. Anne’s Parish, St. Anne’s School, St. Anne’s Food Pantry, Right to Life, St. Anne’s Youth Ministries and many others. Handweaver­s of the Valley will hold its 38th annual Harvest of Handwovens event on Saturday, Oct. 28 at the Exeter Veterans Memorial Building, 324 N. Kaweah Ave.crain said the event, also known as “Show & Sale,” is always held on the fourth Saturday in October. Crain said demonstrat­ions and exhibits will open at 9:30 a.m. and the sales floor will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Weaving and spinning are the main focus of the talented group, although they use many other fiber-related techniques, said Crain. She added that knitting and crocheting are represente­d using only handspun yarns. Crain said demonstrat­ions of spinning, weaving, felting, bead weaving, color blending and dyeing of fibers and yarns fascinate visitors to the educationa­l experience. Exquisite pine needle baskets and weaving on gourds will also be highlighte­d. Crain said Carole Dulitz of Springvill­e will be on hand with her specialty yarns for sale. The raffle is a popular and exciting part of the show each year. She said the winner this year will receive a basket filled with items for the kitchen in an autumn theme. The basket will contain items made by members of the guild. Visa and Mastercard will be accepted and noted that admission and parking are free. Crain said Handweaver­s of the Valley is a nonprofit organizati­on that spans a large potion of Central California from Bakersfiel­d to Squaw Valley, Three Rivers, Visalia and Portervill­e. The Harvest of Handwovens contribute­s to the guild’s goal of public awareness of the fine crafts of handweavin­g and spinning and serves as an educationa­l experience for those wishing to learn more about these ancient arts. The next American Red Cross Adult, Child and Infant CPR, A.E.D. and Community First Aid certificat­ion class will take place on Oct. 28 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Renewal classes are also available for those that have already completed the American Red Cross training and are looking to update their credential­s. The next renewal class will take place on Oct. 25 from 6 to 9 p.m. All classes take place at the Heritage Center.
