The Porterville High School Drama Department will transport audience members to a land of magic and make believe when they present a musical version of the children’s fairy tale, “Twelve Dancing Princesses.”

Craig Caven, the director, said there will be three public showings, with one evening show at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 17, a 2 p.m. matinee and a 7 p.m. evening performance on Saturday, Nov. 18.

Caven said ticket prices are $1 for children and students and $3 for adults. He said all shows will take place on the Frank “Buck” Shaffer Stage in the Porterville Memorial Auditorium, 415 W. Olive Ave., Porterville.

Based on an old French fairy tale, Caven said “Twelve Dancing Princesses” was written by June Walker Rogers with music by Diane Leslie and lyrics by David Rogers.

Caven said the play takes place in the kingdom of King Willie, who he said finds himself with a bit of a problem. Every evening, Caven said his 12 darling daughters are locked safely in their room for a good night’s rest. And yet, every morning they appear tired, sleepy and surrounded by ruined shoes.

“How did they get out of the castle, where do they go to dance the night away, and who’s going to pay for all this ruined footwear,” Caven questioned. “Maybe Michael, the young cowherd, can solve the mystery! But he better hurry [because] if he can’t figure it out within 24 hours he will lose his head!”

Caven said the cast includes PHS students Andrew Bamsch, Caleb Gonzalez, Camerob Dickson, Jacob Walker, Hunter Bock, Erica Palad, Carlos Medrano, Cassidy Moore, Robert Ramos, Hunter Hensley, Zulema Andrade, Jennah Sokoloff, Amairani Cebellos, Lizeth Ayala, Audrey Dickson, Julia Silva, Danielle Swanson, Salma Lopez, Nathalia Medina, Zach Tillery, Karina Diaz, Annaliese Peters and Noa Martinez.

Caven, who is also a drama teacher at PHS, will be assisted by Doug Schiemer, who is both the musical director and accompanist. Ginnie Tillery is the costume coordinator and the stage manager is Annaliese Lesly.

Tickets are available at the door starting at 6:30 p.m. for the evening performances and 1:30 p.m. for the Saturday matinee.
