Iona W. Newby Creighton
Our much loved mother and grandmother, Iona W. Newby Creighton, passed away on Thanksgiving, November 23, 2017, at the age of 86 years. She was born January 30, 1931, in Mitchell South Dakota, to Maude and William Frank Miller. Iona was the youngest of five siblings including Howard, Fred, Lester, and Dorothy Zaugg. She came to California at age 18 years where she met the love of her life, Melvin Ray Newby. They married December 11, 1950. They had three children including Melinda (Lewis) Chang, Robert (Vivian) Newby, and Rebecca (Don) Carmack. Iona is also survived by four grandchildren, Dana (Francisco), Jesse, Lauren (Blake), and Eryn. Melvin passed away in January 1979. She was married to Jack Creighton from 1981 until 1998. She and Jack enjoyed traveling to Europe, the Caribbean, and Hawaii.
During her last 20 years, Iona enjoyed playing cards and games with her many close lady friends. She also delighted in her membership of the Porterville Garden Club, especially raising funds for Penny Pines and decorating her table for their special Christmas luncheon.
Iona enjoyed many handicrafts during her long life time including making Christmas ornaments, sewing, crocheting, knitting, and many other creative endeavors. Her children and grandchildren received many of her lovely handmade gifts.
Prior to moving to Porterville Convalescent Hospital in 2015, Iona was lovingly taken care of by her friend, Jennifer Blackwell. While she lived at Porterville Convalescent Hospital during the past couple years, the staff took wonderful care of her. The family would especially like to thank Aurora for her wonderful personal care and Mireya for her ever uplifting spirit. And, of course, she received great kindness and gentle care from her physician, Dr. Jasvir Sidhu whom she loved.
Iona, Mom, Grandma will be greatly missed.
Viewing will be held at Myers Chapel, Porterville on Friday, December 1, 2017 from 9:00 AM until 12:00 PM. Graveside service will be held at Vandalia Cemetery on Friday, December 1, 2017 at 1:00 PM.
