- recorder@portervillerecorder.com

The 23rd annual Memorial Tree service will again take place at Myers Funeral Service on Tuesday, Dec. 5. The event gives family and friends of loved ones who have passed away the chance to remember them at Christmas.

Christmas trees will be decorated with hundreds of shiny ornaments — each one bearing the names of one or more loved ones who have died.

There is always a crowd of community members at the service and hundreds of guests are expected.

The memorial service will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Myers, 248 N. E. St. After the memorial service the trees will be lit and will stay lit until Christmas Day.

The program is outdoors, but individuals not able to sit in the cold can watch the program inside the chapel on a closed-circuit television.

There is no fee to attend and the program and ornaments are not limited to families who have used the services of Myers. Individuals who hung an ornament last year do not need to reserve a new one for the same individual

In all, the trees will be covered with hundreds of ornaments — praying hands — and each ornament will have at least one name, some ornaments will have two or three names.

As far as the ornaments, there is no fee to obtain one, although it is too late to get one for this year. To obtain a free ornament or reserve a new one, call Myers at 784-5454, or visit Myers Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to obtain the ornaments and place them on the trees.
