Cardinals win Lindsay Cup
PHS girls basketball wins tournament
Lindsay High School’s boys soccer team beat Porterville, 2-1, in the championship game of the Annual Lindsay Cup hosted by the Cardinals Saturday evening.
The Panthers’ Aaron Bedolla scored the first goal of the game in the first three minutes on a shot from inside the 10-yard line.
Nineteen minutes later, the Cardinals’ Ulises Lopez took the ball away from a Porterville player near midfield and made his way down field where he passed the ball to Ismael Ferreira who scored the game-tying goal.
Marcos Ceballos scored the game-winning goal with less than four minutes left in the first half on a penalty kick.
Earlier that morning, Lindsay beat Riverdale 2-0 in the final game of group play. Ferreira scored the first goal on a cross from Lopez 25 minutes into the game and Ceballos scored the second goal off a pass from Julio Godoy.
In the semifinals of the twoday tournament, Lindsay beat Independence, 3-1, with goals from Godoy, Ceballos and Agustin Valdovinos. Moises Betencourt had an assist on each of the three goals.
Lindsay’s junior varsity team also took first place in the tournament with a 3-2 win over Tulare Union. Ivan Gonzalez, Eric Rangel and Jorge Quintero each scored a goal for the Cardinals. Throughout the tournament, Lindsay beat Orange Cove, 6-0, Riverdale, 4-0 and Roosevelt, 3-0, in the semifinals. The Cardinals only loss was 4-1 to Porterville. Porterville 1 Roosevelt 0
Porterville boys soccer beat Fresno’s Roosevelt, 1-0, in the semifinal round of the Annual Lindsay Cup Saturday afternoon. Abraham Suarez scored the Panthers lone goal in the first minute of the game.
Earlier in the morning, Porterville beat Mayfair, 4-0, with two goals from Suarez and one goal apiece from Kevin Barajas and Andre Escarzaga.

Strathmore boys soccer tied 2-2 with Independence in their Saturday morning game in the Annual Lindsay Cup
Luis Prado and Alejandro Bermudez each scored for the Spartans.
MHS third at tourney
The Monache High School boys soccer team placed third at the Lemoore tournament by defeating Mendota on penalty kicks after the game finished 0-0 on Saturday.
Earlier, the Marauders lost to El Diamante, 5-0. Fifteen minutes into the second half, Monache trailed 1-0.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
PHS wins tourney
The Porterville High School girls basketball team came from behind to win the 35th Annual George Glover Memorial at Strathmore on Saturday.
The Panthers rallied from 13 points down to defeat Bakersfield Christian, 55-49, to capture the title.
Jazlynne Medrano led the Panthers (7-1) with 16 points, followed by Cienna Enriquez with 15 points. Julia Hunter finished with 10 points, nine coming in the third quarter which was half of her team’s points in the quarter.
Strathmore ended their tournament by defeating Exeter, 38-35, to take third place. The Spartans were lead by Jazmine Soto with 22 points.
In other action, Granite Hills defeated Orange Cove for seventh place, and Lindsay defeated Tulare Western to win the consolation final.
Porterville’s Hailey Johnson was voted Most Value Player of the tournament. Medrano and Enriquez of Porterville, Lanie Jackson and Dami Sule of Bakersfield Christian, Soto and Kaija Ambriz of Strathmore and Danielle Jauregui of Lindsay were all-tournament selections.
GIRLS WRESTLING
MHS fifth at tourney
The Monache High School girls wrestling team placed fifth out of 18 teams in the second annual R.M. Parks Wrestling Tournament held at Monache on Saturday.
Several Marauders took home medals including freshman champion Charlotte Kouyoumtjian, making her high school wrestling debut. Kouyoumtjian won the championship with an impressive tech fall in the final.
The Acosta sisters, Felipa and Dabne, again reached the finals and placed second with consistent performances. Rhiannon Cabutotan and Anitzia Rodriguez placed fourth, and Ramona Ortega and Adriana Castro finished off the team scoring with a sixth and seventh place, respectfully.
WATER POLO
East wins All Star games
The East boys and West girls won their respective games in the annual East-west High School Senior All Star Water Polo Games on Saturday at El Diamante High School in Visalia.
The West girls won 7-6 and were led by El Diamante’s Lauren Hooyer in goal, allowing just one score in the two quarters played, and recording several saves. She was named the Most Valuable Player for her team, receiving the Visalia Downtown Kiwanis $100 Scholarship Award.
The East was led by Madison Bower of Strathmore, who recorded several assists and steals. She was named the MVP for her team, receiving the $100 Kiwanis Scholarship Award. Dalanie Beardsly of Monache scored two goals for the East, Sam Dieterle of Strathmore and Raeleen Jensen of Monache each scored on goal.
The East boys squad won 18-8. The East was led by Garces standout, Lee Begin’s five goals. He was named the MVP for his team, receiving the Visalia Downtown Kiwanis $100 Scholarship Award.
Oliver Camarena of Monache had three goals, Garrett Keller of Monache had two goals, Grant Synder, Caleb Brumley, and Ishiah Allard all of Porterville each scored two goals and Steven Wilson of Porterville scored one goal. Goalie Brock Fleischman of Monache played in the game.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Granite Hills 64 Corcoran 39
Granite Hills led from start to finish in Saturday’s tournament final win over Corcoran, 6439.
The Grizzlies led 18-9 after the first quarter and extended it to 37-19 at the half.
Armando Cabrera scored 20 points and dished out eight assists to lead the Grizzlies and was named tournament MVP in the process. Shane Lozano scored 13 points and was an all-tournament selection, joining Austin Edmond who finished with 11 points and eight rebounds.
Monache 65 Tehachapi 55
The Monache boys basketball team rebounded from a 55-51 loss to Independence on Friday to defeat Tehachapi 65-55 on Saturday.
Leading scorers for the Marauders were Marlon Johnson with 16 points and Chirrag Sidhu with 14 points.
