SVMC starts nurse residency program
To ensure new graduate RNS are better equipped to provide care and make clinical choices for their patients, Sierra View Medical Center has started their first nurse residency program.
“A fundamental goal of the program is to foster a supportive environment where the resident improves their critical thinking skills, applies clinical reasoning and decision making behaviors and understand both the correlation and importance in the delivery of high quality, safe patient care with good outcomes,” said Christine Williams, SVMC clinical educator and nurse residency program coordinator.
In November, Sierra View partnered with the Vizient/aacn nurse residency program to bring a higher level of learning to the local hospital. Nine new graduate RNS began their journey at SVMC on Nov. 15 and will continue to participate in the evidencebased curriculum for 12 months.
Through this program, the inaugural nurse residents will improve confidence, make clinical choices, gain mentors, transition to experienced nursing, and work in a learning environment at Sierra View.
“This program is a framework used across the United States in academic medical centers to community hospitals to support the new graduate or novice nurse to successfully practice nursing in a supportive and nurturing environment as they develop their competency in the science and art of nursing,” added Dr. Jeffery Hudson-covolo, SVMC vice president for patient care services and chief nurse executive.
The Vizient/aacn nurse residency program focuses on three key aspects to offer the highest patient outcomes and best possible learning environment for its participants: leadership, patient safety outcomes and professional development.
Sierra View Medical Center will continue to implement this program
in 2018 to allow for more local new graduates to have the opportunity to learn alongside professionals in healthcare with two sessions beginning in
April and November of 2018.
Applicants should apply by February for the April 2018 session and by September for the November 2018 session.
