Paz scores hat trick in GHHS win

Senior Veronica Paz had another hat trick in Granite Hills High School’s 3-2 win over Strathmore in both team’s first East Sequoia League game of the season at Spartan Stadium Wednesday.

“I’m really happy for the seniors,” GHHS head coach Gabe Rodriguez said. “It was the first time they’ve beat Strathmore in their careers. It was a really good victory to start and put our stamp on league.”

BOYS BASKETBALL Exeter 57 Strathmore 49

Strathmore boys basketball fell 57-49 to Exeter at home in a nonleague game Tuesday evening.

Jadon Guire led SHS with 12 points followed by Josue Topete with 11. Nick Salas chipped in seven and William Reece had six.

Foothill 60 Lindsay 55

Lindsay boys basketball lost 60-55 at Foothill in a non-league game Wednesday evening.

Senior Javi Avalos led Lindsay with 18 points while sophomore Issac Muñoz followed closely with 17.

Portervill­e 65 Centennial 58

After losing 90-66 to Centennial in an early preseason tournament, Portervill­e boys basketball beat the Golden Hawks 65-58 in a nonleague game at home Tuesday evening.

Steven Kay led the Panthers with 18 points

followed by Jesse Hernandez with 14 and Colton Boyd with 10.

“One month ago Centennial beat us 90-66,” PHS head coach Lance Wallace said. “It was nice to turn around a month later and return the favor. Boys played really, really hard tonight. Steven Kay played the best game of [the] year.”

Portervill­e improves to 10-7 on the season and opens East Yosemite League play on the road

Friday at Mission Oak. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

BOYS SOCCER Mission Oak 3 Monache 0

Monache boys soccer was shutout 3-0 by Mission Oak on the road Wednesday evening.

The Marauders were scoreless with the Hawks in the first half after missing an opportunit­y to score on a penalty kick after a Mission Oak player was called

for a hand ball.

“We started the second half very well and we missed on another great opportunit­y,” MHS head coach Manuel Castaneda said. “Then we allowed Oak to score on a silly mistake and from there on we could not recover. We played a very well plan defense game, but we need to be more consistent.”

Monache’s junior varsity team won 3-1.
