Strathmore girls basketball couldn’t overcome a 21-point halftime deficit to the Firebaugh Eagles and ended their preseason with a 68-57 loss on the road Wednesday.

Jazmine Soto led the Spartans with 19 points and six steals. Teammate Kaija Ambriz put in 17 points, five rebounds and three steals. Natalie Rico played her best game of the season with 10 points and three assists. Portervill­e girls wrestling lost 36-30 to Mission Oak on the road in the team’s first dual meet of the season.

Beginning the season with excitement filling the gym, the Panthers were led by Madison Medina (143 pounds) winning with a firstround pin. Lizeth Fuentes (160) followed with another pin in just 14 seconds. Also winning by forfeit were Alexa Salinas, Julissa Henandez, and Jayda Martinez. Portervill­e boys wrestling lost 45-27 to Mission Oak in their first East Yosemite League dual meet of the season.

Winning for the Panthers were Jayden Fuetnes (120 pounds), Javier Benevidez (132), Andrew Caballero (145), Joey Sandoval (160), Josh Newsom (170), and David Ayala (182).

Wrestlers Austin Clark, James Ybarra, Miguel Zenedejas, Noah Castillo, Adeliado Duran, Angel Venegas, Able Lopez, and Clarence Harmon battled “beyond expectatio­n and gave great effort,” PHS head coach Tim Vanni said.

“Portervill­e came to wrestle,” Vanni said. He added that Mission Oak was on their heels much of the night with Portervill­e maintainin­g the lead for much of the match. Both the girls and boys teams wrestled up to expectatio­n, but Mission Oak regained the lead to win both the girls and boys varsity levels.
