Youth Baseball League registration begins Feb. 5

- Donnie Moore is the director of the City of Porterville Department of Parks and Leisure Services.

A llowing your children to participate in youth sports is a fantastic way to explore and develop lifelong skills. It can play an important role in exercise and also promote mental and psychological advances. With that in mind, registration for our Youth Baseball League will begin on Feb. 5. It is for boys and girls ages 413. We provide a positive, pressure free environment, so that your child truly enjoys the sport and wants to return the following season.

Our coaches focus on keeping the game fun and helping players develop skills that will have long-term benefits as opposed to winning at all costs. To achieve this, we encourage coaches to change up the batting order and positions every game so a kid doesn't hit at the bottom of the order and play right field each game. We think that by concentrating on athletic education and sportsmanship in the early years, they will go on to be better athletes if they choose competitive sports later in life.

Here's what else to expect: practices will start in April and typically coaches schedule those two days a week until games start the first week of May. Depending on the age of your child, games will either be Monday/wednesday or Tuesday/thursday. All ages play at 5:45 or 6 p.m. at the Porterville Sports Complex. Registration is only $58 for the season and there are no hidden costs. Sign up online or in person at the Heritage Center.

Jr. Pirates Track & Field

If running, jumping and throwing are a few things your kids probably do naturally, why not introduce them to a sport that capitalizes on those skills? Jr. Pirates is in its 11th year and offers an exciting opportunity for youth to develop track and field skills. The Club, cosponsored by Porterville College, is designed for boys and girls ages 9 and up.

Setting goals for individual performance is a big part of track and field and it provides experience for goal setting and hard work later in life. Selfdiscipline is definitely required to stick with the workouts. If they do, participants start to see physical changes, faster times, better jumps, and longer throws, all which build selfesteem and confidence. Track and field can also help develop a passion for working out and staying fit well beyond Jr. Pirates. A good foundation in track and field can truly help any athlete in his or her chosen athletic discipline.

Here's what else to expect: practices begin in March and take place at Porterville College. They are held at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We will introduce participants to a myriad of events including hurdles, relays, jumps and throws. We will provide all of the necessary equipment. Participants prepare to compete in track and field meets in Tulare and Porterville. Registration begins Feb. 1 and the cost is only $36 per child. You can register online or in person at the Heritage Center.
