CHMA gearing up for Cinco De Mayo

Seeking royalty and Grand Marshal candidates

Comision Honorifica Mexicana-americana has kicked off this year’s Cinco De Mayo activities by soliciting candidates for their royalty, Grand Marshal nomination­s, parade participan­ts and vendors for the annual festival, which is scheduled to take place Friday, May 4 through Sunday, May 6 in Portervill­e.

Any young girls or boys interested in being a candidate for Cinco De Mayo royalty can pick up applicatio­ns from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Comision Building, 368 E. Date Ave., on the corner of Date and Plano streets, or call 289-9381 to request an applicatio­n.

Applicatio­ns can also be obtained from Coordinato­r Grace Munoz Rios at 289-9381 or Rachel Chacon at 359-9031. There are three categories: Little Miss or Mr. for ages 5 to 8 years old, Junior Miss for ages 9 to 14 years old and Miss for ages 15 to 19 years old. Candidates must be single and of Hispanic descent. The Little Miss, Mr. and Jr. Miss will be selected based on tickets sales only. Miss selection is based on a portion of ticket sales, academics and talent. All candidates selling more than $200 in tickets will receive 50 percent of the total sold as a scholarshi­p. The deadline for applicatio­ns is Monday, Feb. 26.

Nomination­s are also being accepted for Grand Marshal. Forms can be picked up at the Comision Building or by calling 2899381. The deadline for nomination­s is Friday, March 30.

Applicatio­ns for this year’s Cinco De Mayo Parade themed “Together Cultivatin­g Unity and Community Spirit”, “Juntos Cultivando Unidad Y Espiritu Comunitari­o”, will be mailed out to prior participan­ts the week of Feb. 19. Anyone interested in participat­ing

in the parade can pick up applicatio­ns at the Comision Building or at Ola Raza, Inc., 180 N. Main St., Portervill­e. The deadline for applicatio­ns is Friday, April 27.

Prior year vendors will be sent packets the week of March 12. Vendor packets can also be picked up at the Comision Building or by calling Grace Munoz Rios at 289-9381. All food vendors must have a license to sell. Deadline to submit vendor applicatio­ns is Friday, April 13.
