Kids play free

-

Yes, the Porterville Golf Course is open on Monday! They will have regular hours on Presidents' Day and, to celebrate — kids can play for free! Why not spend the holiday enjoying the sport with your family. If you are like me, it seems harder and harder to find time for a round of golf. Getting your kids involved could be a great way to get back in the game. Here are a few of my tips to try and get them excited about the game.

Let's face it, part of the fun of golf for kids is all the stuff that comes with it. I'm not saying you buy them a brand new set of clubs, but even the littlest things make a difference like ball markers, tees, and the occasional sleeve of balls. It's also important to manage the yardage and don't expect them to play at the same yardage as you. This is integral to their enjoyment and fulfilment while playing. Try to have them hit from distances that make the course manageable and allows them to experience some positive reinforcement. Next up, embrace the golf cart for a little added amusement. It's always nice to walk and get the workout, but it might be hard on kids to carry the equipment while hoofing it. And who doesn't like to ride in a golf cart? Lastly, try it when there isn't a lot of pressure to enjoy it or perform — like one of days when kids play free. If they don't like it, you don't have to stress about having shelled out a ton of cash.

The Porterville Golf Course is a 9-hole course and probably one of the oldest in the Central Valley. Regular rates are $12 for 9 holes and only $5 for the repeat 9. If you or your child decide you want some instruction, our golf pro offers private lessons throughout the year and even free youth clinics during the summer. It also has a great footgolf course if that is more your style. The hybrid sport is a unique blend of soccer and golf. It is played with a soccer ball on a traditional golf course and the object of the game remains straightforward: sink the soccer ball in the fewest kicks as possible. Taking your kids on a golf outing will definitely offer a different experience than you are used to, but it might be some of your most rewarding time on the course.

Fishing Derby

It is one of our most popular events of the year! The Fishing Derby is a great experience for parents and children alike. The excited faces of kids as they reel in their fish and show it off to their eager parents is always priceless. The annual event takes place on March 10 at the Murry Park Pond from 9 to 11 a.m. Young anglers have the chance to join the competition for only $3. We limit the amount of participants to ensure there is enough room around the pond and all can enjoy. Trophies will be awarded to the top three children in each age division and top honors will go to the angler that reels in the biggest fish of the day. The Success Bass Club will be volunteering their time and lending us their expertise. We also have support from our community partners like Carroll's Tire Warehouse. Wristbands can be purchased at the Heritage Center. This event is always sold out so no wristbands will be available for purchase the day of.

Spring Sports

Just a reminder that Jr. Pirates Track and Field Club registration continues until Feb. 28. This is a great introduction to the different track and field events and the cost is only $36. Youth Baseball still has a few spots left in the league. The cost is only $58 and is for ages 4-13. Practices begin in April. Visit us online or at the Heritage Center to sign up.
