The Tulare County Office of Education will be hosting its 19th Annual Tulare County Spelling Championship Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. in the Exhibit Hall of the Visalia Convention Center at 303 E. Acequia in downtown Visalia.
This year, 232 spellers from grades four through eight will compete for the opportunity to become the 2018 Tulare County Spelling Champion and advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland, May 27-June 1.
These students represent 116 public and private schools throughout the county.
Porterville schools will once again be well represented at the event, as area students will try to follow in the footsteps of Sequoia Middle School’s Sameera Hussain, who won the event the last three years, but has moved on to high school.
Tulare County Superintendent of Schools’ Jim Vidak and the Visalia Times-delta/tulare Advance-register annually partner to sponsor the event.
“The Tulare County Spelling Championship is every bit as exciting as the National Bee, enjoyed by millions of Americans on television. Again this year, one talented Tulare County speller will be crowned ‘Spelling Champion’ and represent our county at the national competition,” said Jim Vidak.
