PHS, MHS lose in opening round

Ninth-seeded Portervill­e High School boys basketball saw its season end in overtime 59-53 to eighth-seeded Roosevelt in the first round of the CIF Central Section Division II tournament on Tuesday.

The Panthers (15-14) jumped out to 17-7 lead after one quarter and took a 27-19 lead into halftime.

The Rough Riders (20-7) fought back in the third quarter, but Portervill­e still took a slim 36-34 lead into the final quarter.

Roosevelt outscored Portervill­e 15-13 in the fourth to send the game into overtime tied at 49.

In OT, the Rough Riders took control of the game and advanced to the second round, outscoring the Panthers 10-3.

Colton Boyd led PHS in scoring with 10 points, followed by Jesse Hernandez, Kaden Ramage and CJ Fish with nine points each and Steven Kay with seven.

El Diamante 72 Monache 68

Fifth-seeded Monache High School boys basketball fell 72-68 to 12th-seeded El Diamante of Visalia at home in a high scoring CIF Central Section Division II first round tournament game at Monache.

Monache (17-12) scored in double-digits in each quarter.

Jlen Sims scored 17 points to lead the Marauders, followed by Chirrag Sidhu with 12 points, Marlon Johnson with 10 points, Daniel Baca and John Perez with eight points apiece.

This was the final game for MHS coach Gary Miller, who is retiring after leading the Marauders the playoffs and to a coeast Yosemite League title this season.

BASEBALL

Portervill­e 11 Golden West 3

Portervill­e High School baseball opened the season with an 11-3 rout of Golden West in a nonleague game at home.

John Herrera led the team with three hits and three RBIS while Ricky Carranza had three hits. Jonthony Torres, Daniel Perez and Geoff Scott had two hits apiece. The Panthers used four pitchers to aid in their win.

BOYS TENNIS

Strathmore 6 T. Union 3

Strathmore High School boys tennis defeated Tulare Union 6-3 on Tuesday in a non-league match.

The Spartans won four in singles led by Anish Yalamanchi­li, 8-3, Junior Campos, 8-5, Jorge Ambriz, 8-6, and Jose Lara, 8-7.

Yamanchili and JP Rios won 8-4 in first doubles and Heriberto Vasquez and Eduardo Lopez won 8-5 at third doubles.
