Terry leaving Fresno State
To become basketball coach at UTEP
FRESNO — Rodney Terry has informed Fresno State that he has resigned as the Bulldogs’ head men’s basketball coach, effectively immediately, according to the Fresno State Athletics Department.
According to various published reports, Terry, who is a Texas native, will become the next head men’s basketball coach at the University of Texas-el Paso.
Terry coached Fresno State to a 126-108 record in seven seasons with the Bulldogs and won at least 20 games in each of the last three seasons, including finishing 21-11 this season. During his tenure, Fresno State won one conference championship, made the 2016 NCAA Tournament and also reached the NIT in 2017.
“Coach Terry has led our men’s basketball team with integrity and a passion for excellence,” said Joseph I. Castro, Fresno State president. “He leaves a strong foundation upon which we will aggressively build in the coming years. I thank him and wish him the best at UTEP.”
A national search to select the program’s next head men’s basketball coach is currently underway.
“Coach Terry did a wonderful job building our men’s basketball program into a Mountain West champion and a regular contender in our conference,” said Steve Robertello, Fresno State interim director of athletics. “We appreciate his service to our university for the
past seven years.”
“The future is bright for Fresno State Basketball as the foundation is in place to be a Top 25 program, compete for conference championships and advance in postseason play. Our administration, coaches, staff and student-athletes have demonstrated a daily commitment to excellence on the court and in the classroom. The next person who leads our program will have these same core values and elevate our team to even greater heights.”
