Panthers golf wins close one

The Portervill­e High School boys golf team pulled out a 191-200 win over Dinuba in a nonleague match at River Island Country Club just before the clouds opened with heavy rain Tuesday evening.

Both Jarod Forrester and Parker Jones carded a 35 to lead the Panthers. Also for Portervill­e Tyler Jones finished with a 37, DJ Herrera shot a 38 while Tro-q-hill Franco and Ethan Standridge each shot a 46.

“We had a mixed day today with some playing really well and some struggling with [consistenc­ies],” PHS head coach David Herrera said. “Jarod and the Jones brothers all played a good match today. Jarod didn’t start off strong but finished the last four holes one under par.”

BASEBALL

Corcoran 10 Strathmore 2

Strathmore High School baseball fell 10-2 to Corcoran in their East Sequoia League home-opener Tuesday.

Josue Topete had a big double that drove in the only two runs for the Spartans and finished with two hits. William Reece also had two hits and two stolen bases. Matt Brown threw three strong innings and gave up only one run. Strathmore travels to Sierra Pacific today for a 4 p.m. ESL game

BOYS TENNIS

Portervill­e 6 Mission Oak 3

Portervill­e High School boys tennis defeated Mission Oak 6-3 in an East Yosemite League match Monday afternoon.

In singles No. 4 Joseph Catalina won 6-3, 6-2; and No. 6 Juan Cerros won 6-1, 6-1. No. 3 Roman Ayon also won after winning his first set 6-3, losing his second 6-4 but winning the tiebreaker 10-6. No. 2 Adrian Remigio lost his first set 7-6 then won the next two 6-1 and 10-5.

In doubles, No. 2 Ayon and Catalina won 8-4 and No. 3 Noah Sanchez and Derek Perez won 8-4.

The Panthers are 1-0 in the EYL and host Tulare Western today at 4:30 p.m.
