tthe Porterville Chamber of Commerce hosts First Friday Coffee events the first Friday of each month. The events are held at Galaxy 9 Theatres at 631 N. Indiana St. beginning at 7 a.m. First Friday Coffee is designed to bring people together to network with other businesses. There will be coffee and snacks followed by a short program.
tthe Porterville Youth Center offers free recreation for youths after school. The center is open from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and is located inside the Heritage Center at 256 E. Orange Avenue. The Youth Center offers a stimulating environment for youths ages10 to 18 and there are no registration fees or monthly costs. The Youth Center’s game room features pool and pingpong tables, game consoles, foosball, board games and more. Members can also enjoy arts and crafts, organized sports and regular adventure trips. Access to the Margaret J. Slattery Children’s Library located inside the Heritage Center offers students a computer lab with Internet access. A quiet classroom is also available for homework assistance. Parents and children must be present when enrolling. tthe “We’re Egg-cited about Spring” mini reading program at the Porterville City Library is for all ages and runs March 1-31. Sign ups are underway. Participants will receive a reading log and bookmark. For every five hours of reading accomplished, they can redeem their reading log for an entry into their fabulous raffle. The Easter Bunny will also be hopping over to visit the Porterville City Library for single or group photo opportunities. A 4x6 photo print will be provided for free if you bring an unopened, unused school supply (one picture per family). People can also use their own camera. The donated items will be delivered to children in the community. CASA of Tulare County’s second Annual Superhero Run is set for March 24 at Mooney Grove Park. The event features a 5K and 1K Run/ Walk (timed), raffle and a Superhero Costume Contest as well as a pancake breakfast served by the Visalia Breakfast Lions. Included with your registration: One CASA Superhero Run t-shirt, a commemorative gear bag and water bottle (first 75 registrants only); a finisher’s medal; and a chip timed race. All registrants are automatically eligible for the raffle on the day of the run. Registration cost is $25 per runner/walker age 12 years and older and $10 for anyone 11 years and younger. The Riata Ranch Cowboy Girls are also performing during the opening ceremonies. The Lindsay Community Theater proudly presents “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” based on the book by Ken Kesey. A field trip to see how the Pier Fire has changed the blue oak woodland on the lower slopes of Lumreau Mountain is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on March 25 at River Ridge Ranch, 37675 Balch Park Road. The walk is being led by Gary Adest of the River Ridge Institute, Barbara Brydolf of the Alta Peak Chapter of California Native Plant Society, and forest experts Nina Hemphill and Ernie Garcia. The event is co-sponsored by the River Ridge Institute and Alta Peak Chaper of CNPS. The walk is listed as moderately strenuous, covering approximately five miles and 1,000 feet in elevation gain. Attendees are asked to bring lunch and water and to dress appropriately. The walk will be moved to April 1 if it rains. For more information, call 539-0207. The Porterville Historical Museum will be hosting an appraisal fair Sunday, March 25 at 1 p.m. The public is encouraged to bring in antiques, collectibles and other items of historical significance for evaluation and appraisal. Admission is $5 for adults, $1 for students, and free for Friends of the Museum and children under age 6. The museum has assembled a panel of local appraisers for the Antiques Roadshow-like event that will lend their insight and expertise in a variety of areas including porcelain ware, pottery, glassware, Native American artifacts, antique firearms and edged weapons, and vintage photography. Bill Horst will also contribute his decades of knowledge on guns, blades and Native artifacts as appraiser for the event, and will be joined by John Mcwilliams, Doris Hosfeldt, Sharon Hall, and Anita Alba. In addition to providing historical context and values of items, experts like Horst can provide valuable information for owners of antique firearms. Parties interested in selling or transferring older guns may need to adhere to federal firearm guidelines, depending on the age of the weapon and if it can fire modern ammunition. The cost for appraisals at the event will be $10 for one item and $20 for three, and light refreshments will be served during intermission. The Porterville Historical Museum is having a Casino Bus fundraising trip to the Eagle Mountain Casino on Tuesday, March 27. Happy hour at Giovanni’s Pizzeria is from 5 to 6 p.m., with drinks priced at $1 each. A casino trip ticket is required in order to get the special price drinks. The bus has two picks up locations, one at Giovanni’s Pizzeria at 45 N. Second St. The second is the Casino Parking Lot Number 4 on Highway 190 at Avenue 248. The buses head up to the casino at 6 p.m. and feature games that are played on the bus to pass the time. Cost for the casino trip is $10 per person and includes the bus trip, games on the bus, the Museum-only slot tournament, a food voucher, and $25 Summit Club Card credit to use for gambling. The trip lasts from 6 to 10 p.m. A valid identification card is needed if a person does not already have a Summit Club Card. The customer can drive themselves up to the casino, but must sign in and have a ticket. If you are going to drive up to the Casino please be there by 7:30 p.m. or you cannot get the perks. All monies are used to help support the Porterville Historical Museum and its continuing mission to preserve the past for future generations. The Museum is located in the old Southern Pacific passenger depot that was built in 1913 and is located at 257 N. D St. in Porterville. The Museum has been operating since 1965 and is dedicated to the collection, preservation, display and teaching of local history.
