The museum houses a collection of vintage lumber mill and farm equipment. Antiques from local families are on display in the 1860 Murphy House and in the main museum. The Porterville Historical Museum is having a Casino Bus fundraising trip to the Eagle Mountain Casino on Tuesday, March 27. Happy hour at Giovanni’s Pizzeria is from 5 to 6 p.m., with drinks priced at $1 each. A casino trip ticket is required in order to get the special price drinks. The bus has two picks up locations, one at Giovanni’s Pizzeria at 45 N. Second St. The second is the Casino Parking Lot Number 4 on Highway 190 at Avenue 248. The buses head up to the casino at 6 p.m. and feature games that are played on the bus to pass the time. Cost for the casino trip is $10 per person and includes the bus trip, games on the bus, the Museum-only slot tournament, a food voucher, and $25 Summit Club Card credit to use for gambling. The trip lasts from 6 to 10 p.m. A valid identification card is needed if a person does not already have a Summit Club Card. The customer can drive themselves up to the casino, but must sign in and have a ticket. If you are going to drive up to the Casino please be there by 7:30 p.m. or you cannot get the perks. All monies are used to help support the Porterville Historical Museum and its continuing mission to preserve the past for future generations. The Museum is located in the old Southern Pacific passenger depot that was built in 1913 and is located at 257 N. D St. in Porterville. The Museum has been operating since 1965 and is dedicated to the collection, preservation, display and teaching of local history. An open studio for budding artists is offered by the Porterville Art Association from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Wednesday at the Art Association office at 151 N. Main St. It will be open to experienced and inexperienced artists who are interested in painting with others or are interested in learning new or different types of techniques or materials. An art instructor will be available for individual instruction and to critique work. There will also be a show of the work every six months. The open studio is open to anyone. Sergeant Shepherd, the new costumed mascot for the Porterville Police Department, is available to appear at youth-oriented meetings and events. The mascot’s purpose is to spread the motto — “Stand Up and Speak Out!” According to the Police Department, Shepherd will be encouraging the community to “Stand Up” for family, friends and community, and “Speak Out” against drugs, bullies and crime. The Porterville Youth Center offers free recreation for youths after school. The center is open from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and is located inside the Heritage Center at 256 E. Orange Avenue. The Youth Center offers a stimulating environment for youths ages10 to 18 and there are no registration fees or monthly costs. The Youth Center’s game room features pool and pingpong tables, game consoles, foosball, board games and more. Members can also enjoy arts and crafts, organized sports and regular adventure trips. Access to the Margaret J. Slattery Children’s Library located inside the Heritage Center offers students a computer lab with Internet access. A quiet classroom is also available for homework assistance. Parents and children must be present when enrolling.
