Lindsay Council to receive disinfection update
This is first quarter notification for 2018, Camarena said
The Lindsay City Council will receive an update regarding disinfection byproducts (DBP).
The quarterly notification for DBP is a requirement of the State of California Water Resources Control Board (DWR), said Michael Camarena, the director of city services.
Camarena said this is the first quarter notification for 2018 and noted that as long as the city’s system exceeds the maximum contaminant level (MCL) for DBP, quarterly notification will be required by DHS. He said the first notification was released January 2017 for fourth quarter of 2016.
While the system exceeds the MCL for DBP, Camarena said the notice states that this is not an emergency and that an alternate source of water is not needed. Camarena said the notice also points out that persons with specific health concerns consult their doctor.
Camarena said disinfection byproducts are chemical, organic and inorganic substances that can form during a reaction of a disinfectant with naturally present organic matter in the water. Byproducts that are regulated, Camarena said, are total trihalomethane (TTHM) and five haloacetic acids (HAA5). He said the DBP'S are a result of the city's primary chlorine disinfection process of surface water. He said the city identified a time frame of 15 months to have the problem corrected, if necessary.
