The Lindsay High School baseball team picked up two wins Tuesday in their second day of the 62nd Annual Selma Greater Kiwanis Tournament and improved to 5-8 on the overall season.

Isaiah Duran had six strikeouts and was the winning pitcher in Lindsay’s 7-6 victory over Sequoia from Redwood City. It was the team’s second game and freshman Nick Dunning got the save.

Dunning came in after Duran’s pitch count got to 110 with two outs in the sixth and a runner on second. The Cardinals intentionally walked Sequoia’s No. 3 hitter to put runners on first and second. Sequoia’s clean-up hitter had been ejected the inning before and his replacement hadn’t played much so Dunning was able to get him to pop up on two pitches.

Up 7-6 in the bottom of the seventh Sequoia lined a double to deep center to start the inning. A ground ball to second moved Sequoia’s runner to third. With their infield in, Dunning was able to get pop ups to the Cardinals’ shortstop and first baseman for outs to end the game.

“Very exciting game against a very good ball club,” LHS head coach Brett Kendig said.

At the plate Duran went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two stolen bases. Both Mark Ibarra and Leo Vasquez went 2-for-4 with Vasquez scoring a run and Ibarra getting an RBI. Jake Macias also had an RBI and went 1-for-3.

In their first game the Cardinals defeated Coalinga 10-5 with Ryan Scheufele getting the win on the mound. Scheufele went six innings, scattering nine hits and giving up three earned runs.

Duran had a day at the plate going 2-for-3 and driving in two runs. He also scored two runs and had two stolen bases. Cameron Smith also went 2-for-3 and scored two runs. Edgar Silva went 1-for-1 with a double and an RBI while Mark Ibarra had a hit, an RBI and two stolen bases. Scheufele also had a hit and two RBIS.

The wins were a nice way for the Cardinals to bounce back after losing 5-3 to Mclane on Monday. They’ll face the Minarets (10-1) today at 12 p.m. Lindsay lost 7-4 to the Mustangs last Friday.

“Our guys played fundamentally, sound aggressive baseball all day today,” Kendig said. “We moved runners over and ran the bases hard. We had clutch two out hitting and our pitchers battled and made quality pitches in key situations. Nothing was given to them. They earned it today. Very proud of our guys.” Marauders rout CVC,

fall to CHS Monache High School’s baseball team shutout Central Valley Christian 16-0 before falling 5-3 to Corcoran in their second day of the Tulare-visalia PRO~PT Invitational tournament.
