Panthers, Spartans win PUSD City Meet

The Portervill­e High School boys and Strathmore girls track and field teams came away the winners of the Portervill­e Unified School District City Meet Thursday at Jacob Rankin Stadium.

For the boys, the Panthers won 83-38 with both the Spartans and Grizzlies of Granite Hills tying for second with 38 points. Strathmore beat Granite Hills 67-53 in the girls’ competitio­n while Portervill­e took third with 39 points.

Portervill­e’s Demario Ennis won the 100-meter race with a time of 12.17 seconds, as well as the 200 race with a personal record time of 24.89. Strathmore’s Andres Lara (12.32) placed second in the 100 followed by Portervill­e’s Arturo Gutierrez (12.62 PR). Granite Hills’ Jesus Daniel Orozco Salcido (24.91) had a Pr-finish for second in the 200 while teammate Eliseo Bernal (26.16) placed third.

The Panthers’ Angel Roman (4:59.29) also took first in the 1600 with a season-record finish, while Granite Hills’ Jonah Flores (5:02.96) and Billy Risner (5:39.01) placed second and third, respective­ly. The three also made up the topthree times in the 800 with Flores (2:10.27 SR) leading the way trailed by Roman (2:12.34) and Risner (2:18.03).

Portervill­e won both the 4x100 meter relay and the 4x400 with times of 47.26 and 3:47.92, respective­ly. On the 4x100 team were Ennis, Kobe Dennison, Moises Cabrera and Daniel Cervantez. The 4x400 team was made up of Gutierrez, Roman, Gutierrez, Xavier Fernandez and Jose Herrera.

The long jump and triple jump were swept by Portervill­e, with Dennison taking first in both. Dennison’s leap of 20-feet and 6-inches was a personal record in the long jump while his 39-09 in the triple jump was a season record. Ennis (19feet) and Herrera (17-9.5) took second and third in the long jump. Herrera (38-9) managed a secondplac­e finish in the triple jump while Portervill­e’s Aaron Bedolla (36-6) came in third.

Herrera (5-4 SR) beat out Dennison (5-2 SR) for first in high jump while GHHS Cesar Andrade (5feet) took third.

Strathmore’s Nick Salas won both the 110 and 300-meter hurdles with season-record times of 16.62 and 43.32, respective­ly. In the 110, Salas was trailed by PHS Xavier Fernandez (16.73) and GHHS Orozco Salcido (18.69). Fernandez (43.36 SR) was just less than half a second behind Salas in the 300 while Brian Esquivel (49.16) came in third.

The Spartans’ Fabian Alcantar (55.76) won the 400 while PHS Cervantez (56.21) placed second and SHS Jose Lara (1:04.82) came in third. The Spartans picked up another win in the 3200 with Esteban Paniagua (13:33.94) coming in first followed by PHS Matthew Tirado (13:34.09 PR) and Eric Torres (13:47.95).

Strathmore picked up another win in the discus where Shaylan Singh placed first with a season-record 121-10. He was followed by PHS Joseph Lopez (100-10) and GHHS Felix Magana (8810). GIRLS Strathmore girls track team dominated the PUSD City meet, taking first in every race except for the 4x100 relay and 100. The Spartans’ Madison Bower led the way for the team taking first in the 200 (27.98), 100-meter hurdles (17.52) and 300 hurdles (48.01 SR). Along with Kaija Ambriz, Aliyah Garcia and Jazmine Soto; Bower helped lead the Spartans to a 4:36.78 first-place finish in the 4x400 as well.

Trailing Bower in the 200 were PHS Mariyah Avila Peterson (29.42) in second and GHHS Bianca Ramos (30.20). Granite Hills’ Savanah Bugarin (18.35) and Veronica Buckman (18.96 SR) came in second and third, respective­ly, in the 100 hurdles. The Spartans swept the top spots of the 300 hurdles with Soto (51.56 PR) and Ambriz (52.41 PR) placing second and third.

Strathmore’s Dagny Mcintosh took first in both the 1600 (6:27.50) and the 3200 (13:35.72). In the 1600, PHS Lily Rodriguez (6:52.39) finished second and GHHS Miriam Lara (7:08.17 SR) came in third. Portervill­e’s Diana Andrade (16:35) and PHS Irelynn Weaver (17:01.58) placed second and third in the 3200.

Soto (1:03.49) took first in the 400 meters with Ambriz (1:06.99 PR) following in second and Bugarin (1:08.09) in third. Strathmore’s Garcia (2:45.56 SR) won the 800, beating out Rodriguez (2:49.56 SR) and Mcintosh (2:49.65 PR).

Bianca Ramos, Catalina Bugarin, Veronica Paz and Savanah Bugarin came together to win the 4x100 for Granite Hills with a time of 54.08. Catalina Bugarin (14.24) also won the 100 while Ramos (14.39) took second and SHS Bella Baez (14.42 PR) finished third.

In the field events PHS Jennifer Mawson had season records in both the shot put and discus which she won with distances of 28-6.5 and 74-4, respective­ly. Granite Hills’ Maria Rojas took second in both the shot put (25-5) and discus (73-3.5). Thirdplace finishers were PHS Joanna Guzman (24-6) in the shot put and SHS Anushka Larson (62-2 PR) in discus.

Granite Hills’ Paz won the high jump with a height of 4-10, while SHS Paige Borges (4-8) and GHHS Sydney Ruckman (4-6 PR) placed second and third. Ruckman (32-8) took first in the triple jump followed by PHS Emily True (32-2) and Paz (31-5 SR). True (15-1) placed first in the long jump while Paz (14-10) and PHS Micaela Hackett (14-2.5) placed second and third.
