PAB students take a Bite of Reality

- By MATTHEW DAY

On March 16th, Junior and Senior PAB (Partnership Academy of Business) students were presented with the opportunity to be part of an exciting program called Bite of Reality.

The Richard Myles Johnson Foundation partnered with the Tulare County Federal Credit Union (TCFCU), and together they enabled students to experience a glimpse of life after high school.

Bite of Reality is an interactive app that provides students with a job and family. The students must walk around to booths where community members acting as salesmen try to upsell items to students that are necessary for living, such as a house, food, childcare, and transportation services.

Senior Beatrice Soto said, “The volunteers tried to trick me into making unwise purchases.” Soto reflected that like in the real world, it is easy to make unwise decisions that result in running out of money.

In fact, that’s exactly what happened for some students. Senior Arthur Aparicio went over budget and the Bite of Reality app sent him to the Credit Union booth.

Workers from TCFCU acted as financial advisors and helped Arthur and other students make better financial decisions. “Wow,” commented Arthur, “I had no idea how hard it is to stay on budget.”

This is just one of the many things PAB does to promote its students’ education. The four-year academy encourages its students to complete internships around town, be a part of the on-campus Credit Union, and become financially literate.

The on-campus TCFCU branch is promoting Financial Literacy Month by educating students at PHS. They are presenting financial information and quizzing various classes to teach them about important financial information.
