PHS Drama Night of Improvs is Saturday
The Porterville High School Drama Department will have its final “A Night of Improvs” of the school year at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 21 on the PHS campus.
The single show will be presented on the stage of the Drama Room, A-7, right next to the Porterville Memorial Auditorium.
Admission price is $1 per person and allows the ticket holder the opportunity to witness the mad cap antics of some of PHS’ finest improv artists as they compete for the comedy crown.
Improv or improvisation is a type of acting that requires the performers to extemporaneously create scenes, characters and situations on the spot without scripts or prior rehearsal. This is one of the first skills actors learn and can be used in a variety of circumstances on stage; both amateur and skilled professionals rely on improvisation to enhance their performances.
People who have watched the TV show “Whose Line is it Anyway?” will already be familiar with the format and some of the exercises. Often comic in nature, improv can be fun for both actors and audience.
Throughout the evening, young actors from the PHS Drama Department will perform a variety of exercises with such fanciful titles as “Highlander,” “Movie Trailer,” and “Crisis Situation.” Each exercise will feature different teams of students and requires quick thinking as the scenarios unfold. Audience participation is welcomed and expected, and the evening’s entertainment is family friendly.
This feature will also include a new feature known as “long-form improv.” Most improvs are considered short form and last only 3-5 minutes. Long form lasts longer and allows the performers more time onstage to add more details to the story.
Tickets are available at the door starting at 6:30 p.m. For more information, call 782-7279.
