SATURDAY The APA (Academy of Performing Arts) Pathway at Harmony Magnet Academy will be performing the musical “Little Shop of Horrors,” Thursday through Saturday, April 19-21, in the HMA multi-purpose room. General admission will be $5 per person with free admission for children 5 years old and younger. Performanc­es will begin at 7 p.m. APA students will perform with Strathmore High band and HMA orchestra students. “Little Shop of Horrors” is a rock and roll musical comedy written by Howard Ashman and composed by Alan Menken, who are both famous for their works of “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast,” and “Aladdin.” It is based on the 1960’s low-budget horror film of the same name. The musical is about a meek flower assistant named Seymour (Mason Mccracken), who longs for his co-worker Audrey (Jessi Zeller). Following a “total eclipse of the sun,” Seymour discovers a plant which he names Audrey II (Mario Pena) that feeds off human flesh and blood. After Seymour feeds Audrey’s boyfriend, Orin (Sam Wilkinson) to the plant he has to come up with more bodies to feed Audrey II. The 57th Annual Jack Ass Mail Run is slated for Saturday, April 21. This long-standing Portervill­e/ Springvill­e tradition is carried out each year by the Jack Ass Mail Run Committee and is open to the public. The Wagon Master and his posse will gather in front of City Hall in Portervill­e at 8 a.m. and set out to deliver the mail to Springvill­e. Along the way, hundreds of riders on horseback, covered wagons, buggies and stagecoach­es will join in on the ride that travels through east Portervill­e, along the 190 East and ends in Springvill­e. A posse of bandits are always waiting in Springvill­e to steal the mail, and a gunfight ensues. Other festivitie­s waiting at the end of the ride in Springvill­e will be provided by the Springvill­e Chamber of Commerce, including the Jackass Mail Run Queen Contest. The mail is collected for weeks in special handmade rustic boxes, stamped with a special “Jackass Mail Run Stamp”. The community is encouraged to purchase a Jack Ass Mail Run stamp for four bits ($ .50) and have your letter delivered as it was in the Old West. Stamps may be purchased from any JAMR Committee Member, Freeway Auto Parts, Portervill­e Chamber of Commerce, The Antler’s and Evans Feed. The general public wanting to participat­e in the ride is to meet on D Street between Olive and Orange, ready to ride at 8:30 a.m. For more informatio­n, call 784-6010. Bob Merzoian is directing the local play. “Harvey” is the story of Elwood P. Dowd and his imaginary friend Harvey, a 6-foot-tall rabbit that he includes on all of his sister Veta’s socail gatherings. To avoid future emberassme­nt, Veta’s mother, Myrtle Mae, has Elwood committed to a sanitarium. The Lindsay Community Theater brings the music of Simon and Garfunkel to life starring Swearingen and Kelli as part of the 2017-18 Concert Series. The show is on April 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Lindsay Theater, 190 N. Elmwood in the heart of downtown Lindsay. There will be gardens at homes to tour, a winery to enjoy and a garden décor sale at Portervill­e College included. The cost of the tickets is $10. Children under 8 are free. The proceeds will be used for scholarshi­ps to local students. You can also purchase them from any Garden Club member or call Darlene Byars at 539-2317. The 7th Annual Warrior’s Day on the Lake will take place Saturday, April 21 at Success Lake in Portervill­e. The event provides a free day of fishing and fun for military veterans and wounded warriors.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Central Valley veterans are seeking boats and their captains to provide veterans with a free day of fishing. Due to a large response from veterans wishing to participat­e in the event, more boats and captains are needed to take our wounded warriors fishing for the day. Bird Walk at Big Sycamore Trail is at 8 a.m. on Saturday, April 21 at US Army Corp of Engineers Headquarte­rs, 29330 Highway 190, Portervill­e. Big Sycamore Trail is an easy to moderate tree lined walking path that has had over 140 bird species spotted there. Guides from Tulare County Audubon will be available to help beginners identify the various birds that are migrating through and also the birds that call this place their home. Restoratio­n Reservatio­n, a free community outreach event for everyone hosted by Tule Grace 490 Church, is scheduled for Saturday, April 21. The event goes from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Tule River Indian Reservatio­n baseball field by the gymnasium. The day will feature music, prayer and encouragem­ent. A free lunch will be served.
