The Porterville Breakfast Rotary Club will once again host the 17th annual Cancer Run/walk at Granite Hills High School on Saturday, May 5. The Cancer Run raises funds to be used locally and benefit the community by supporting the Roger S. Good Cancer Treatment Center (CTC) at Sierra View Medical Center. With these funds, the CTC is able to host the Survivor’s Dinner, Cancer Support groups, health fairs and several other community outreach projects along with the purchasing of educational materials.

This year the run is honoring the lives of three individuals who courageously battled cancer.

Deonne Moore, loving mother and wife, was born in April of 1933 in Norman, Okla., and lost the battle with cancer Aug. 2, 2016. Moore was a valued individual, known for giving words of love and encouragement to her family and friends. She never missed an opportunity to leave notes to her children saying “I love you” in their lunch boxes and “Welcome Home” in their suitcases to find after a trip.

Her son, Donnie Moore states, “Mom definitely scattered joy in how she lived out her life.”

Deonne certainly ‘scattered joy’ throughout the community as she would take countless meals to those in need, provide goodies for her coworkers, write thank you notes, and even welcome those into her home who otherwise had nowhere to go on holidays.

Moore is survived by her husband Monte, three children Bruce (with wife Petra), Deonna (with husband Dan), and Donnie (with wife Sally); along with five grandchildren. Her son Donnie also stated that Deonne was always able to see the best in others regardless of her personal challenges.

Blake Bounds was born in Porterville in April 1973 and lived in Porterville his entire life. He was a cherished son, husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, and good friend to many. Blake was one of a kind. If you knew him, you loved him. His smile and sense of humor could light up any room he walked into… and he often did, carrying a rack of ribs with him to throw on your barbecue.

He was funny, wise, a true outdoors man, and a hard worker. Blake was always eager to share his life stories of hunting and fishing, camping, winning any game of horseshoes he entered, working in Alaska, and of his beautiful daughters.

He lived life to the fullest and he was a good and honest man. He lost his battle with gastric cancer on May 1, 2017. Blake was taken way too soon by this terrible disease — but it can never take away the love and memories of those that held him dear.

Loyd Winner was born Feb. 6, 1937 in Maud, Okla. Loyd had moved to Terra Bella with his family when he was a child. A graduate of Porterville High School, Loyd went on to work at Porterville Developmental Center as Psychiatric Technician for 25 years.

Loyd had a passion for cars, not just any kind of car, but classic cars. The pride he had in rebuilding a car and making it beautiful again. He owned countless cars over the years. Any car he owned was for sale (for the right price). Loyd would go on many weekend road trips all around the state to look for car parts and sometimes even come home with a car or two.

Loyd’s love for cars ran so deep that he was a founding member and one of the presidents of the Rollin’ Relics car club, helping to organize many charitable events, including car shows, dances and fundraiser to help the local youth.

Loyd was once called the oldest teenager around. He was selfless, compassionate, caring and a loving man. Loyd lived a happy life. Although his time here on earth is done, he was at peace and knew all was good and that we would all be ok. Loyd lost his battle to cancer on Sept. 26, 2017. He was loved beyond measure and will be greatly missed.
