The sting of last year’s fourthplace finish was washed away for Porterville High School’s boys golf team after the undefeated Panthers placed first at Tuesday’s East Yosemite League championship meet and claimed a “special” EYL title at the Tulare Golf Course.
As a team, Porterville carded a 455 and secured the victory with big help from No. 4 Jarod Forrester, No. 2 Parker Jones and No. 1 David “DJ” Herrera. Tulare Western finished second with 468 followed by Tulare Union with 469, Monache with 499, Mission Oak with 513 and Delano with 577. The Panthers, along with MHS senior Austin Thompson, will advance to the CIF Central Section Central Area tournament on May 8.
“I’m really proud and I think it’s a little extra special because my son is on the team and I really wanted to have an EYL championship with him on the team,” PHS head coach David Herrera said. “Just a little extra special seeing that number in the gym, you can always kind of remember, ‘Hey that’s when he was with me.’... And I watched Jarod grow up. He went to school with my son, he’s always over at our house so it’s kind of like I have multiple boys here that I’ve seen grow up since they were little so that makes it extra special.”
