PUSD seniors receive Merit Awards
Local students and teachers recognized
Congressman Kevin Mccarthy announced Friday the recipients of the 23rd Congressional District of California 2018 Merit Award for five students in the Porterville Unified School District.
Making the list were Granite Hills High School’s Savannah Banuelos, Harmony Magnet Academy’s Aime Alarcon, Monache High’s Tina Zhen, Porterville High’s Matthew Day and Strathmore High’s Teresa Alcantar.
Five local educators were also honored with Inspirational High School Educator Awards, including Elissa Lombardi, GHHS; Angelina Contreras, HMA; Anthony Gale, MHS; Julie Chapman, PHS; and Seth Yocum, SHS.
“I am impressed every year with the bright, young minds in our community. This award recognizes the hard work these students have put in over their academic careers and the dedication of our educators to enrich and prepare these young minds for boundless opportunities. It is inspiring and in-
stills great optimism to meet such exceptional students and their instructors to congratulate them on jobs well done,” said Congressman Mccarthy.
The 23rd Congressional District of California 2018 Merit Award was created to recognize outstanding high school students who have demonstrated exemplary school citizenship, volunteerism, community service, involvement in extracurricular activities, leadership skills and have earned a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
