Mathis, Sigala continue to lead in Assembly race

-

Republican incumbent Devon Mathis continues to maintain his lead in the state Assembly District 26 election.

Nearly all of the local races have been decided, except for the state Assembly District 26 seat.

The top two votegetters in the Assembly race move on to a November runoff.

Mathis has 30.3 percent of the vote (11,308) and is followed by Democrat Jose Sigala with 29.5 (10,990) and Republican Warren Gubler with 28.7 (10,705), according to the Secretary of State website.

Voters from Inyo, Kern and Tulare counties have a say in the Assembly District 26 election.

Counties across the state continue to record votes from the state primary that took place on Tuesday.

The Tulare County Elections Office reported that Friday it was focused on processing vote by mail and mail ballots as well as canvass activities that included the organization of Postmark Plus 3 ballots — those that are postmarked June 5 but that arrive no more than three days later — totaling 6,437.

With the addition of Friday’s ballots, 38,208 people voted in this election — 12,076 on election day, 14,391 by mail and 11,741 all-mail precincts — bringing voter turnout to 23.64 percent.

In the last statewide primary on June 3, 2014, voter turnout was 31.95 percent based on 43,873 ballots cast out of 137,306 registered voters.

The elections office has until July 5 to certify the election.
