Winona “Nonie” Swen

Winona “Nonie” Swen of Bakersfield, CA passed away Wednesday, June 28, 2018.

Nonie was born in Stratton, Nebraska on December 29, 1931 to Lacy and Mary Wheaton.

The third of 6 children; as a child, she attended a one-room school house and told stories of the 4-mile trek to get there. They included walking on the top of fence posts to keep from sinking into the snow when the drifts covered the fence and riding together with her siblings on the horse when they were able to take it to school.

The Wheaton family moved to California and ultimately settled in Terra Bella. Nonie attended Porterville High School where she enjoyed playing sports. Her future spouse, Mike Swen, also attended there. They married and moved to Bakersfield. Nonie lived her life in faithful service to God, loving and caring for those around her.

After raising her children, she went to work at Brock’s/gottschalks in the lingerie department. One of her greatest joys was helping women who’d had mastectomies move forward and see the beauty in themselves.

Nonie is survived by her husband, Mike Swen, her children and their spouses, Mick and Debra Swen, Richard and Janet Swen, Ron and Kim Swen, and Don Romero and Pamela Swen-romero. In addition, Nonie has 9 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Memorial Service will be held at Laurelglen Bible Church, 2801 Ashe Rd, Bakersfield, at 9:30 am, July 6, 2018.
