A free keto diet class and support group is being held from 2-4 p.m. each Saturday between June 16 and July 28 in the History Room of the Portervill­e City Library. The ketogenic, keto for short, diet is a very low-carb diet, which turns the body into a fat-burning machine. The class and group is being run by a local registered nurse. Registrati­on for Portervill­e’s Summer day camp is underway. According to a Portervill­e Parks and Leisure Services’ press release, the camp “provides children with a summer adventure and tons of fun.” Daily activities will include arts and crafts, games, skits and songs, sports and swimming. The camp is designed for children ages 5-12, and will be hosted at the Heritage Center at 256 E. Orange Ave. on Mondays through Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sessions begin June 11 and continue through Aug. 3. Cost is $95 per week and includes lunch and an afternoon snack. City Pool will be open through Labor Day. The pool is open daily from 1 to 5 p.m. for recreation­al use through the Labor Day holiday. Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for youth, ages 12 and under. The Portervill­e Chamber of Commerce hosts First Friday Coffee events the first Friday of each month. The events are held at Galaxy 9 Theatres at 631 N. Indiana St. beginning at 7 a.m. First Friday Coffee is designed to bring people together to network with other businesses. There will be coffee and snacks followed by a short program. Residents without air conditioni­ng at home or work can escape the heat at four day-time cooling centers. The Heritage Center at 256 E. Orange Ave. is open from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. City Hall at 291 N. Main St. is open Mondays through Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The Portervill­e Transit Center at 61 W. Oak Ave. is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Fridays; 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. The Portervill­e City Library at 41 W. Thurman Ave. is open Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Portervill­e Youth Center offers free recreation for youths during the summer. The center is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and is located inside the Heritage Center at 256 E. Orange Avenue. The Youth Center offers a stimulatin­g environmen­t for youths ages10 to 18 and there are no registrati­on fees or monthly costs. The Youth Center’s game room features pool and pingpong tables, game consoles, foosball, board games and more. Members can also enjoy arts and crafts, organized sports and regular adventure trips. Access to the Margaret J. Slattery Children’s Library located inside the Heritage Center offers students a computer lab with Internet access. The other thing going on at the Heritage Center is Summer Day Camp. Kids ages 5-12 are supervised from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Visit the Youth Center for a tour, or visit the City of Portervill­e website or call 791-7695 for more informatio­n. Make your summer reservatio­ns at the City Pool. Pool parties are a way to celebrate any event, from your child’s birthday party, a graduation, end of the school year activity or even a family reunion. The City Pool is open to all ages and requires little to no set up. Reservatio­ns for school events can be made between May 21 and June 8. The bookings are not to exceed six hours in one day and schools must have a 30 minute break between parties. The general public can reserve private bookings on Saturdays and Sundays between May 26 and Aug. 26. Hourly rates for use of the facility begin at $85 and vary based on the number of guests. Reservatio­ns can be made at the Heritage Center, 256 E. Orange Ave. They will be taken on a firstcome, first-served basis. Early booking is advised as available time slots are limited. The Tule River Historical Museum is open to the public from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays with no admission charge. The museum houses a collection of vintage lumber mill and farm equipment. Antiques from local families are on display in the 1860 Murphy House and in the main museum. Portervill­e city library’s summer reading finale carnival Wrap up summer reading with some fun! Join the Portervill­e City Library for their Finale Carnival on August 4 at Centennial Park and say goodbye to summer. Enjoy funnel cakes and get to know E&M’S Reptile Family as they bring out some friends which include a python, tortoise, tarantula, and more. The event takes place from 9:00 am- 12:00 pm and the reptile show starts at 10:00 am. There will also be community booths, raffles, an obstacle course and rock climbing wall.
