Contract work is nearing completion for hazard tree felling along Forest Road 23S16 north of Alta Sierra in the Sequoia National Forest, and the road reopened Friday.

Travelers going through the area may encounter sections of road that are temporarily closed for public safety while contractors continue to fell hazard trees, expect temporary delays when visiting the area.

Hazard trees removed under contract are the result of both tree mortality and the 2016 Cedar Fire. The Cedar Fire affected about 30,000 acres on both the Western Divide and Kern River Ranger Districts. Hazard trees were felled along the more traveled roads within this footprint on both districts.

“Fire and beetle-killed trees are considered a safety hazard along roads,” said Forest Supervisor Teresa Benson. “Felling hazardous trees will help provide for the safe and effective use of roads in the Sequoia National Forest and Giant Sequoia National Monument.”

Fire restrictions are in effect across the forest, limiting campfires to developed sites. Propane stoves are still allowed with a campfire permit, which can be obtained at any Forest Service, CALFIRE or Bureau of Land Management office, or www.preventwildfireca.org
