Sports Complex Heats Up

We have officially entered our busiest season out at the Sports Complex. It’s quite the spectacle on a Saturday morning in the fall to see 80 acres covered with young athletes competing in soccer and football. Here are a few things that will make the visit more enjoyable for all.

Arrive early, drive cautiously and park only in designated parking areas. I can’t stress this enoughit’s hard on the grass and sprinkler system when undesignated cars drive onto the fields.

Use good sportsmanship. This goes for coaches, players and spectators! This sounds redundant, but too often we see adults turn a positive competition into an ugly scene.

Pick up your trash. Help us keep the facility and our community looking nice.

Take your furry friend to visit the dog park while you are there. It’s located in the northwest corner of the complex and has separate play areas for large and small dogs.

Paws in the Pool Our City Pool may close to human swimmers after the Labor Day weekend, but the water will be open for a doggie dip on September 8. Join us for our third annual ‘Paws in the Pool’ event where your furry four-legged friend can enjoy a much deserved cool off after a hot summer in a heavy coat. How does it work? Dogs of all sizes are invited to the pool ‘paw-ty’ to show off their swimming, fetching and paddling skills. The afternoon will feature two swim sessions- large dogs, over 25 lbs., can swim between 9:00- 11:30 am and small dogs, under 25 lbs. can swim between 11:30 am- 1:00 pm. The cost is only $3 for every dog and owner and $1 for any additional spectators. Check out our website for a complete list of pool and pup rules.

Corporate Games There is still time to register a team for the annual Porterville Corporate Games. This premier business- to- business competition takes place September 10- 20 and brings local organizations of all sizes together for a variety of fun and entertaining activities all while vying for the most accumulated points and ultimately, ownership of the coveted Corporate Cup. This year’s Games will feature cornhole, a game show, bowling, archery, volleyball, foot golf, a scavenger hunt, hoop shoot-out and obstacle course. Visit www.portervillecorporategames.com for more information- only the first 16 teams to register will be accepted and spaces are going fast!

Youth Basketball Registration for our Youth Basketball League will begin on September 10. This league is open to children ages 5- 13. Practices will begin in November and games will start in December. Our league welcomes all skill levels and develops fundamentals, character and sportsmanship. The goal is to foster a positive, pressure-free environment without putting too much stress on the points or outcome of the game. We want your child to enjoy basketball and look forward to playing with us again the following season. The cost of the league is only $50 and includes a team shirt and basketball. If you volunteer to coach, we will give you a $5 discount on registration. I recommend skipping the lines and saving some time by registering online. Space is limited!

Music on Main Now that the weather is starting to cool down a little, you can spend your Friday evenings relaxing in a park and listening to some tunes from local talent. Music on Main will kick off on its fall series on September 7. Bring out your lawn chairs and blankets for free concerts from 6:00- 8:00 pm every Friday evening in Centennial Park. Dancing and picnic dinners are welcome. Music on Main continues through October and is co-sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and City of Porterville.
