Go from a total newbie to crushing 3.1 miles in just two months- and yes, that's the distance of a 5K for those of you that didn't know. The season for community road races is just around the corner and this is the year to get involved! We just opened registration for our Veterans Day Run and there is plenty of time to start training. Getting started is by far the hardest part, so here are few tips that might help.

Have good running shoes. Be sure to choose a pair designed for your arch and stride. If you're not sure which type of shoe you need, visit a running specialty store to get fitted properly.

Make a plan. Devise a training schedule that is realistic. The Couch to 5K app is a great resource that can give you detailed workouts leading all the way up to the event. There are plenty of online tools that can keep you on track- and most of them are free and require no running experience!

Start running for time and not distance. Just increase the duration of your runs gradually. Your first few runs should be completed at an effort and pace that is comfortable.

Don't worry about how fast you are running. Your endurance and speed will build over time so don't be afraid to walk when needed. Walking breaks between one and five minutes are a great way to split up your run into more doable pieces.

Look to support. A running partner or group is the best way to stay motivated. Invite your family and friends to join you in training and stay tuned for more details about how to register for the Veterans Day Run.
