National Public Lands Day (NPLD) will be celebrated with a clean-up event at Success Lake on Saturday, September 22. This event will be hosted by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and will include educational and volunteer activities.

Adults, youths, families, college students, all persons who wish to volunteer are welcomed.

NPLD has been celebrated for over 20 years and is a hallmark clean-up event for Porterville and the surrounding areas.

The Tule Recreation Area will be the area of focus for volunteer clean-up.

On-site registration opens at 7 a.m. and clean-up work begins at 8 a.m. and continues until 12 p.m.. Coffee and danishes will be provided in the morning for all volunteers.

“This is the biggest volunteer event we put on here,” said Success Lake Park Manager Charles Fenwick. “There could be anywhere from 300 to 400 people there.”

It is recommended that volunteers bring a hat, sun glasses, sunscreen and comfortable work shoes.

National Public Lands Day is a “Free Fee Day” meaning that all park day use areas are free to use this day.

All volunteers will be provided a NPLD T-shirt.

Colonel David Ray, district engineer stated, “This is a day when we can all show our pride in our local Federal Parks. This type of cleanup allows current and future generations of Americans to continue to enjoy this special place the same way we do now, pristine and beautiful.”

The public is encouraged to join in to complete work projects from painting to sprucing up camp sites, to lake side clean up, and planting trees to name a few.

“This year we will be planting some trees to try and provide some shade for when it is hot,” Fenwick explained. “We also paint the parking stalls and we will paint some of the picnic tables that are wooden to kind of spruce everything up.”

This year, a presentation will be given to show the efforts that will be made to keep an invasive mussel population from growing. The presentation will include a special mussel-sniffing dog.

Lunch is served to all the volunteers and there are many supporting community outreach booths for participants to enjoy.
