Three public safety officers were sworn in to the Lindsay Police Department at Lindsay’s City Council meeting Tuesday evening.

After a small introduction from Police Chief Hughes the ceremony began.

“We have the pleasure of promoting three public safety sergeants which will round out our department,” Hughes stated.

Andrew Paul Robinson took to the podium first to repeat the words spoken by City Clerk Bret Harmon. With his right hand raised, Robinson took his pledge and his wife approached to place his badge on to his uniform.

Second to be sworn in was Juan Eduardo Alcantar who was pinned by a fellow officer after he repeated the words Harmon recited.

The final recipient of the night, John David Moreno, stood at the podium and pledged to keep the city safe before his pin was placed on his uniform by his wife and his son.

“The Council is very pleased to see these advancements in the public safety department and of course we all want to shake the hands of those who have been promoted,” said Mayor Kimball as she proceeded to stand and shake the hand of each newly promoted officer.

After the ceremony ended, the Council members were given the opportunity to report on matters having to do with the city. Council Member Velasquez thanked those who participated in the Lindsay Police Department lip sync video. Council Member Salinas informed that a committee had gotten together to discuss names for the new sports facility. He explained that five names had been settled on and requested that a vote be taken at the next Council meeting for a final decision as to what the facility will be named.

“The five names we came up with are Lindsay Sports Complex, Lindsay Recreation Complex, Lindsay Athletics Complex, Lindsay Community Sports Park and Lindsay Community Sports Complex,” Salinas explained.

City Manager Bill Zigler suggested that an online poll take place to generate more opinions and the Council agreed that an online vote would be a good idea.

Kimball reported that a new art exhibit would be on display. The featured artist will be a 90-year-old woman who has been painting her whole life.

Ireland Mccall, Lindsay High School’s student representative, informed the Council that the high school’s homecoming will be September 28 and that members from the class of 1968 will be attending the homecoming football game.

After the school update, Zigler gave a staff report to the Council. He said there will be a saxophone concert at the sports facility on September 22. He gave information pertaining to a change in paving requirements through the county. He also told Council about a fall clean-up event that will take place in October as well as the health fair that will be happening October 20.

All five items on the consent calendar were approved with no items being pulled out for discussion.

An update on the Hermosa St. and Westwood Ave. roundabout was

presented to the Council by Director of City Services Mike Camarena. Camarena explained that the map of construction was approved by the school district and the street in front of Jefferson School will be temporarily closed off.

A supervised space will be created a small distance from the campus that will allow for parents to safely drop off their children. Students will be walked to campus by a district employee. Camarena also reported that the city will be providing

all of the signs needed for the construction.

No future agenda items were put forth and no executive session was held.

The next City Council meeting is set for September 25 beginning at 6 p.m. in the City Hall located at 251E. Honolulu Street.
