Cardinals grab 1st ESL win 3-0
Lindsay sweeps Corcoran 3-0
Lindsay High School volleyball fought through some close sets to pull out a 3-0 win over Corcoran for the team’s first East Sequoia League win Wednesday evening at home.
The Cardinals (3-7, 1-2 ESL) won the sets 26-24, 25-20 and 2522 with strong front row play, good serves and leadership from players like seniors Mariana Lopez and Heaven Razon, as well as junior Berenise Rangel. Razon finished with four aces and five kills, Lopez had two aces and six kills while Rangel totaled 10 kills and three blocks.
“Feels good, the girls needed it,” LHS head coach Amanda Robles said about getting the first league win. “So hopefully we’re going to get that momentum and role with it.”
The last two sets were close for Lindsay despite the team taking large leads. In the second set, the Cardinals went from being down 9-5 to scoring 13 points straight while Lopez served. Rangel was instrumental in the front row with her well-placed tips while sophomore setter Alexis Leon looked good assisting her teammates, as well as getting in some strong hits too. But blocks and aces brought the Panthers (4-12-2, 1-2 ESL) back into the match.
In the final set Lindsay jumped ahead 7-2 then fell behind 16-15 off of sloppy coverage, miscommunications and net violations. But the Cardinals held out and scored the last seven points
straight with Razon scoring the last point on a kill.
“I feel like the girls kind of get comfortable when we get that lead so we're trying to break that cycle,” Robles said. “But they come back fighting, they play till the end so that's what helps us out.”
Up next, Lindsay hosts Immanuel (9-15) tonight before heading to Visalia for an invitational tournament on Friday and Saturday.
