A free keto diet class
and support group is being held from 2-4 p.m. each Saturday between Aug. 11 and Sep. 29 in the History Room of the Porterville City Library. The ketogenic, keto for short, diet is a very low-carb diet, which turns the body into a fat-burning machine. The class and group is being run by a local registered nurse. Thurman Ave. is open Mondays through Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sergeant Shepherd, the new costumed mascot for the Porterville Police Department, is available to appear at youth-oriented meetings and events. The mascot’s purpose is to spread the motto — “Stand Up and Speak Out!” According to the Police Department, Shepherd will be encouraging the community to “Stand Up” for family, friends and community, and “Speak Out” against drugs, bullies and crime. The Porterville Youth Center offers free recreation for youths during the summer. The center is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and is located inside the Heritage Center at 256 E. Orange Avenue. The Youth Center offers a stimulating environment for youths ages10 to 18 and there are no registration fees or monthly costs. The Youth Center’s game room features pool and pingpong tables, game consoles, foosball, board games and more. Members can also enjoy arts and crafts, organized sports and regular adventure trips. Access to the Margaret J. Slattery Children’s Library located inside the Heritage Center offers students a computer lab with Internet access. The other thing going on at the Heritage Center is Summer Day Camp. Lindsay Night Market has started for the 2018 season, and will continue through the fall. The market is held each Friday from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. in downtown Lindsay. It features food, vendors and other activities. Main Street concert series is held each Friday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Centennial Park across from City Hall. The concerts, which feature local talent, are free. Attendees are advised to bring a lawn chair or blanket.

The National Alliance for Mental Illness of Tulare County will sponsor the NAMI Family-tofamily Education Program specifically for families of persons diagnosed with a serious mental illness. The 12 session series of classes will start in Porterville on Wednesday September 19, 2018 from 6 p.m. to 8:30p.m. and run trhough November. The course will cover information about schizophrenia, the mood disorders (bipolar and major depression), panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, borderline personality disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD); coping skills such as handling crises and relapse; basic information about medications; listening and communication techniques; problemsolving skills; recovery and rehabilitation; and self-care around worry and stress.
