Burton School District held their bimonthly board meeting Monday afternoon to discuss the superintendent recruitment update, a new lit crosswalk at one of the schools and future programs for students within the district.

For those still interested in applying for the BSD superintendent position, the job posting will remain opened until Friday, Sept. 21 at 5:00 p.m. on Edjoin.org,

Along with the job posting, BSD also conducted a survey of district parents, staff and students to get their input on desired qualifications for new superintendent candidates. The survey will remain open until Sunday, Sept. 23 at 11:59 p.m.

Board President Eddie Hernandez talked about a project coming up in the near future.

“We have a lit crosswalk that will be at the N. Westwood Street and W. Putnam intersection at Jim Maples Academy,” said Hernandez. “Hopefully we will have it completed this year to help alleviate some traffic congestion and security issues.”

Irene Ortega, communication and community engagement officer reviewed recent BSD social media posts. She talked about the district’s involvement in the Corporate Games involvement as well as a recent post inviting the community to volunteer and read to BSD students two days per week for one hour.

“This is something that we are starting at Burton Elementary School probably in January,” said Ortega. “Community readers will be coming in to help some of our students, those who are below their reading levels.”

Community readers will first have to be fingerprinted and must show proof of a tuberculosis test. Ortega mentioned they are also planning to invite SCCA students to be readers and help younger students.

“We are going to make reading fun, it’s not an intervention,” said Ortega. “It’s more of a book club.”

Those interested in volunteering can find more information on the BSD Fa-

cebook page.

Anthony Martin, director of education services covered the 2018-2019 Compliance Education Code 60119, which makes sure the district has sufficient

textbooks or instructional materials for all.

“We do have sufficient material for all of our students in classes,” said Martin. “As required by law, we do have access to the material students need and they all have access to those.”

Due to the absence

of board members Obdulia Alvarado Matt Mccracken, two items were tabled for the next board meeting — the naming of the PALL Center and the Ivy League Project update.

The next BSD board meeting is scheduled to be Monday, Oct 1.
