Spartans beat Cardinals 5-4

The Strathmore High School girls tennis team held off rival Lindsay 5-4 in Tuesday’s East Sequoia League match in Lindsay.

The match was tied after singles with the Spartans winning three and the Cardinals winning three.

For Strathmore No. 1 Neha Reddy beat Berenice Lemus 8-2, No. 2 Hennasey Mendoza beat Gisselle Chavez 8-4 and No. 6 Daniela Dela Cruz beat Joanna Martinez 8-5.

Lindsay picked up wins with No. 3 Maria Martinez beating Taylor Simonich 8-6 and No. 4 Carolina Jimenez beating Kacie Bellisch 8-1. The Cardinals also won the No. 5 match when Nayeli Martinez won the first set 8-7, then the tiebreaker 7-5, against Abby Miller.

In doubles, Strathmore’s Reddy and Mendoza won 8-4 while Lauren Levya and Elizabeth Fischer won the No. 3 match 8-0. The No. 2 match went to Lindsay’s Chavez and Jimenez after the duo won the first set 8-7 and the tiebreaker 7-4.

Corcoran 8 Granite Hills 1

Granite Hills High School girls tennis team lost 8-1 to Corcoran in Tuesday’s East Sequoia

League match in Corcoran.

The Grizzlies lone win came from an 8-5 victory for No. 5 Deissy Vargas in a singles match.

Monache 3 Tulare Union 2

Monache High School volleyball defeated Tulare Union 3-2 to in their East Yosemite League season opener on the road Monday.

The Marauders started the match with a 25-23 loss then came back for a 25-18 win. Monache lost the third set 25-22 then

won the next two matches 25-20 and 15-13.

Hailey Kelley led the team in kills with 14 while also tallying six digs and two blocks. Madisyn Baxter had 12 kills, four digs and one block. Hally Flynn had 10 digs and nine kills. Tia Jules finished with seven kills, five blocks and two digs. Libero Kristen

Watson had 18 digs while setter Gabby Cox had 44 assists and 14 digs.

At the Visalia Varsity Invitational over the weekend, the Marauders placed first in the Silver Bracket. Monache beat Golden West (2-0), Sierra Pacific (2-1) and Kingsburg (2-0) in the championship match.
