Portervill­e beats Monache 7-2

Portervill­e High School girls tennis picked up their third straight win with a 7-2 victory over rival Monache in Monday’s East Yosemite League match at home.

The Marauders’ No. 1 Maddie Giannetto won the first match of the afternoon with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over the Panthers’ No. 1 Vanessa Madrigal. However the five remaining five matches went in Portervill­e’s favor and gave the team a definite, early victory before heading into doubles.

No. 3 Sierra Mitchel won Portervill­e’s first singles match by taking down Jenessa Lathrop 6-0, 6-2; and was followed by teammate, No. 5 Erica Palad, winning her match 6-0, 6-2 against Tanya Perez. In the No. 2 match, Portervill­e’s Chloe Weaver beat Abigail Sotelo 6-4 but then lost the second set 6-2 before winning the tiebreaker set 10-3. No. 6 Lizbeth Martinez won her match 6-1, 7-5 over Reynah Leal.

The final singles match of the afternoon lasted around two hours and went in favor of Portervill­e’s No. 4 Jewelia Maniss. Facing Monache’s Jenna Keller, Maniss dropped the first set 7-5 but won the second 6-1. In the tiebreak-

er set Maniss finished off Keller 10-6.

The Panthers (4-1 EYL) won two out of the three doubles sets with Madrigal and Weaver winning the No. 1 match 8-3. The undefeated duo of Zeila Rivera and Hannah Walker, remained perfect in EYL with an 8-5 win.

Giannetto, alongside Keller, won the No. 2 doubles match 8-5 after coming back from being down 3-2 to pick up the final win for the Marauders (2-3 EYL).

On Wednesday, Monache hosts Tulare Union while Portervill­e travels to Mission Oak. Both EYL matches begin at 4 p.m. Woodlake 7 Strathmore 2

Strathmore High School girls tennis team lost 7-2 to Woodlake at home in Monday’s East Sequoia League match.

The Spartans picked up wins in the No. 3 match with Taylor Simonich winning 8-4 and the No. 6 match where No. 6 Lauren Leyva won 8-7 in the first set and 7-0 in the tiebreaker set.

GIRLS GOLF MHS takes 6th at Best Ball Trny

Monache High School’s girls golfers, seniors Danielle Margosian and Rachel Clement, shot an 87 to earn sixth place and a medal at the Monache Best Ball Tournament held at River Island Golf Club on Monday.

Stockdale won the tournament with a score of 75 while Liberty placed second. Liberty shot a 76 and tied with Garces but won the card-off for second. Strathmore’s Anushka Larson and Kylie May shot a 90 to finish 10th.

“All eight Marauder girls played and for some it was their first 18-hole round ever,” MHS head coach Jake Winter said. “Scores are coming down and they are ready for the 18-hole league tournament­s that start next week.”
