Porterville Recorder

Five wins separate first from last going into Week Six

- BILL PARSONS

When I was talking with our editor Matt Sarr last week about the Prognosticators and how well (maybe I did not use the word ‘well,’ more along the lines of just how he was doing), Matt told me that he just needed one good week and he would show all our readers just how much he knew about football. If you recall, I said in last week’s recap that all of us here at the Recorder had faith in Matt..that we Believed!

Well, our faith and belief has been rewarded. This past week, Matt, not only posted an 8-2 record, but was the only Prognosticator to post a winning mark for the week (Not so sure what that says about the other Prognosticators, but if I were them, I would be concerned).

Yes, after four very difficult weeks of living in the shadows of his fellow pickers, Matt has now moved into a tie for second place with an overall mark of 25-232. Not bad for someone most (many, but not us at the Recorder) thought was down and out. Great job Matt! I knew all those football magazines would pay off one day.

Week five proved a little more challenging for the rest of the pickers, with a number of upsets and just plain poor choices. Coming in second last week was be the master craftsman/sports collector and renowned jeweler, David Horowitz. David continues to use the method that as long as you get 50% right, you will never be too far from the top.

David went 5-5 for the week and now sits along in fourth place with — you guessed it — a 24-24-2 record for the season. Not to fear, David is counting on everyone else to continue as they have been and is waiting just a little longer to make his move to the start. Plus, he has been very busy getting all kinds of great buys ready for holiday shoppers.

Judy Hall continues at the top of the Prognosticators with an overall record of 27-21-2. Like the rest of the panel, Judy got caught up in some of the upsets over the past weekend. All of the panel except for Matt, went for undefeated Duke over Virginia Tech. But after being upset themselves the week before, the Hokies had upset on their minds defeating Blue Devils. Judy went 4-6 for the week.

Also at 4-6 for the week was Porterville Mayor, Milt Stowe. With no Cowboys or Raiders to pick last week, the mayor hung his hopes on the Vikings and the Steelers, not to mention picking Stanford over the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. That’s OK mayor, we all mistakes from time to time. Better times are ahead as the Cowboys are back on the list of picks this week and there is no Stanford pick. After five weeks, the mayor is tied with Matt for second place with a season mark of 25-23-2.

Coming in last for the week was local banker Gary Gostanian. As most of you may remember, Gary led the pickers the first two weeks and decided to lay back and give the others a chance. Gary, you may have laid low long enough, as the rest of the pickers have passed you by. I am sure it was your plan to give them false hope, and you are ready to surge back to the top at any moment.

Gary went 3-7 in week five and now stands at a season record of 22-26-2. Not to worry, all those fans of Gary (and I am sure there are many), Gary will rebound. He is just working his plan.

Week five saw the pickers as a whole go 24 and 26, but week six looks to be a better week with what appears to be some easier games. There’s a gouple of good college games with Texas taking on Oklahoma and LSU taking on Florida. All four teams are ranked in the top 25, so both games should be exciting.

Well that is it for week five. We wish all of the Prognosticators good luck in week six. Please don’t forget to stop by Deli Delicious and thank them for sponsoring the Prognosticators weekly. While you are there, take the opportunity to try some of their delicious offerings. You will be glad you did.

Until next week, have a blessed week and keep rooting for your favorite Prognosticators.
