Marauders take down Panthers in OT

It took four years to do it but Monache High School boys water polo team finally took down crosstown-rival Porterville with a 13-10 overtime victory at home in Monday’s East Yosemite League game.

Tied at 9-all entering the fourth quarter, neither the Marauders (6-9, 2-2 EYL) or Panthers (9-10, 2-2 EYL) could seem to find the back of the net for a game-winner until Porterville’s Trevor Riley put a close shot in past Monache goalie Bryce Arce midway through the quarter for a 10-9 lead. But the Marauders kept taking shots and finally Brett Martin scored the game-tying goal with under two minutes to play while a Monache block sent the game into overtime.

There was no score in the first 3-minute overtime but something kicked for Monache in the second and the Marauders scored three for the win. The gamewinner came in the first 30 seconds with Martin scoring followed by bonus goals from Ian Azevedo less than a minute later and Cohen Cotton in the final twenty seconds.

Five out of eight Monache players scored with Martin and Azevedo leading the team with four goals apiece. With nearly the whole team scoring, the Marauders took the pressure off one of their top scorers, Nick Taylor, and provided goals when the team needed them the most.

“I just told them that we need to keep playing hard,” MHS head coach Rich Taylor said. “Keep passing the ball because they’re going to double team Nick so somebody’s going to be open. So keep passing, passing, passing and take a good shot. [Porterville’s] Colton [Boyd is] a great goalie so it’s got to be a great shot. And we were able to put the ball in the cage and get the goal.”

The Marauders (6-9, 2-2 EYL) were the first ones on the board with two goals less than a minute apart from Azevedo, assisted by Danan Weisenberger, two minutes into the game. Another goal from Nick Taylor put Monache up 3-0 but Porterville closed in on that lead with back-to-back goals from Trevor Riley. However, the Marauders had the last say of the quarter with another goal from Martin.

Led by Riley and Josh Halopoff, Porterville managed to tie the game at 6-all to end the half after giving up a goal apiece to Martin and Azevedo. Two goals from Porterville’s Garrett Lamb and another from Halopoff, as well as two skip shots for goals from Weisenberger and a goal from Nick Taylor, kept the score tied heading into the final quarter.

“That was a huge win for us,” Rich Taylor said. “We haven’t beat Porterville in [four]

years at least. It was good for the kids, they really wanted that win. They played hard, they played with intensity the whole game. Porterville played hard too and I mean it was a great game. Tied there at the end, we were fortunate to get the win.”

Besides their teamhigh goals, Azevedo also finished with five steals while Martin had one assist and one steal. Nick Taylor finished with two goals, three assists and one field block. Weisenberger had two goals, four assists, three steals and one field block. Cotton had one goal and one steal, Kai Ferrier had two steals and one assist while Seth Mccormick

had one steal. Arce had four blocks.

For Porterville, Riley tallied a game-high five goals and seven steals. Halopoff had three goals, two assists and one field block while Garrett Lamb had two goals and two assists. Goalie Colton Boyd finished with 10 blocks, three steals and one assist.

Porterville has over a week to prepare for a home game against Tulare Western (12-11, 0-3 EYL) on Tuesday, Oct. 16. Monache hopes to keep their intensity going come Wednesday when the team host Tulare Union (16-6, 1-2 EYL). In their last meeting, the Marauders lost 9-5 to the Tribe.

“We got to keep the intensity up,” Rich Taylor said. “We have a game on Wednesday against

Tulare Union, who we lost to earlier this season, and we've got to keep the intensity and play like that for four quarters. Then hopefully we can beat them as well.”
