Day of the Dead altar exhibit returns to Lindsay Museum
Lindsay Art Association is proud to present its sixth annual “Dia de Los Muertos” (Day of the Dead) Altar exhibit. Opening day is Friday October 26, and a reception will held Sunday, October 28 at the Lindsay Museum & Gallery located at 165 N. Gale Hill Avenue in Lindsay.
For the reception, the Lindsay High School honor guitar group will play, and this year the association is also featuring folkloric performers from 3:30-4:30 pm. Hot chocolate and Pan de Muerto will be served.
Many of the altars are created by LHS learners. Dia De Los Muertos is an annual national holiday in Mexico. November first honors children and November second honors adults.
The holiday is celebrated in many different ways throughout Mexico and the Americas. It has its origins in ancient Pre-columbian Indian ceremony. This is a ritual time when the dead are expected to visit the living and are honored guests for the night.
In many homes a ritual altar is prepared to honor the returning dead soul. The altar can be attractively adorned with marigolds, the traditional flower of the dead. There is incense and a
candle to light the way for the returning dead soul. Food that the dead were fondest of in the life is prepared. Photos and favorite items are also used to personalize the altar.
Altars for children have delightful toys, usually skeletons made of papier-mâché and balsa wood.
The Dia de Los Muertos exhibit will run from October 26 until November 11, Fridays and Sundays from 12-4 p.m.
