Panel once again bitten by the upset bug in Week Seven

- BILL PARSONS

Well week seven of the Picking Panel found our merry band of Prognosticators dealing with the upset bug once again. After going a combined 16-34 in week six, our fearless group improved slightly to 1931 in week seven. No one saw LSU beating then number 2 Georgia coming. Nor did they see the Dolphins upsetting THE BEARS or Oregon taking down Washington. Only Gary Gostanian saw USC knocking off Colorado.

After seven weeks, our leader Judy Hall is all even at 34-34-2. Last place holder, Matt Sarr is only five games off the pace at 29-39-2. So as you can see, it has been a very difficult season with all the upsets. I am guessing some of our Prognosticators are starting to question their decision to be part of this wonderful panel.

But hope is still alive as we enter week eight that with a catch here and a bounce there things will still turn their way. The good thing about a long season is that if you can just stay close, a good week can change everything. That is just what this group has done all season — stay close. So everyone is still in the running for the championship, and I believe they will stay that way right up to final whistle of the last game.

So here we go with the week seven recap. Leading the way was jeweler to the kings (or anyone else who wants to buy something from his large selection of quality jewelry), David Horowitz at 5-5 for the week. Like everyone else, David missed out on the Georgia/washington/bears combo. But he did get his Redskins right, as they beat the Panthers and took over the lead in the NFL east division. That makes David very happy, so this may be a good time to stop by his shop. He may be so happy that he offers up huge discounts. It could happen! David is now in second place for the season with a 33-35-2 mark.

Tied last week for the number one position was Suncrest Bank’s Gary Gostanian. Gary, who led the pack early in the season, is on the rebound trail and finished week seven with a 5-5 record. Missing many of the same games as David, Gary is now in fourth place overall for the season with a 30-38-2 total.

Long time front runner, Judy Hall was able to hang on to first place for the season with a 3-7 showing for the week. That makes her 34-342 for the first seven weeks. Judy has been very kind and given the guys a chance to jump ahead of her, but with no one seeming interested in doing so, I believe Judy is getting ready to run off and leave them.

Laying in wait is Mayor Milt Stowe. Milt has shown his football knowledge a couple of times this season by having outstanding weeks. Not so the last couple of weeks. Milt went 3-7 for week seven and now has a season mark of 32-362 and holds down third place all by his self.

Even though the race is close, someone had to hold up the last spot on the list of amazing Prognosticators. Who better than the Recorder’s editor, Matt Sarr? Now in no way does this show a lack of football prowess. On the contrary, this shows great sportsmanship on the part of Matt.

As the host of the Prognosticators, Matt and I feel it is only right to give the rest of the panel every opportunity to be showcased each week while Matt holds back, just biding his time. Matt showed some of his vast knowledge two weeks ago when he went 8-2. He is just waiting for the correct moment and then he will strike. (How does that sound Matt? You owe me $5). Matt also had a record of 3 and 7 last week (You may not want to be so very kind and stay a little closer to even. Just saying!), and is now alone all by himself in last at 29-39 -2.

Week eight may provide some surprises also, with games such as Michigan and Michigan State, Stanford at Arizona State and the Patriots at THE BEARS! But the game of the week has to be the Cowboys at the Redskins. I wonder how David will go on this game?

Until next time, I hope you have a blessed week. As always, we appreciate all of our wonderful readers. Please take time to stop by Deli Delicious and thank them for sponsoring the Prognosticators. Try some of their delicious sandwiches. You will be glad you did.

Keep rooting for your favorite Prognosticator. They need all the support they can get.
