“It seems that we need a new vision to really find out what is working in other cities and try to apply that here in Lindsay,” stated Lindsay City Council candidate Yolanda Flores.

With her smile and cheerful attitude never fading, Flores sat down with the Recorder to share why she is running for City Council and how she believes she could help push for an overall better Lindsay.

“Most of the voters here in the community already know me, and they know that I am very trustworthy and I do things for the community,” said Flores. “I go for the truth, I ask questions and if I get a question I’m uncomfortable with, I research it until I find the answers.”

When faced with a question regarding the issues around the city, Flores immediately knew which issues were her priorities.

“There are many issues here in Lindsay that need to be spoken about, and one of them is trust. The other issue is water. Water is an issue throughout the valley, but especially here in Lindsay. There has to be some solution,” stated Flores. “I am a solution-driven person. If they tell me I can’t do something, I will look for a way to do it.”

Flores continued on the topic of issues facing Lindsay.

“Another issue is the roads. The tax dollars from gas and things of that nature have to go back in to the roads,” said Flores. “It’s particularly the roads leading to the schools. Some don’t have sidewalks and they are bumpy and horrible, especially to the high school. We could put speed bumps. I’ve checked and they are only $2,500 each, so why not use speed bumps? I mean, what is the

cost for the safety of our children and our grandchildren if it is that amount?”

Flores wasn't only focused on the issues however. She also expressed how much she loved her city and the people in it, and how she feels called to help others.

“I volunteer my service to whoever needs it, like if people need paperwork to be completed for them or they don't know English and they need interpreting,” expressed Flores. “I go to the police department with them when they are scared to go. I do a lot of things for the community. I have been a public servant all my life. That's how I grew up.”

She also did not shy away from the aesthetics of Lindsay and shared her ideas on how to make Lindsay more appealing to those who live in and drive through the city.

“Our town is a pretty nice town. I think the city should work closely with the Chamber of Commerce and work together that way we can have really good frontage in front of the buildings. This will bring people to Lindsay naturally,” said Flores.

She offered an idea on how to spruce up Lindsay and generate more money for the city.

“We should be inviting businesses here,” said Flores. “With businesses comes jobs and tax revenues. Everything comes with businesses.”

Flores was insistent that if elected as a City Council representative, she would be focused on the water issues Lindsay is being faced with.

“I believe water is the first issue,” Flores stated about her goals as a Council Member. “Kids have to take their water bottles to school in order to drink safe water. I don't ever remember doing that, not when I went to school, not when my kids went to school. That is completely unacceptable. It shouldn't be happening.”

Flores made it clear as to what she believes is the role of a Council representative.

“We are supposed to be public servants. We serve the people. They are the ones who elect us,” said Flores. “They are the ones that need help and we need to listen to their concerns. It is not about us, it is never about the City Council. It should be about our citizens and what they want and what they need.”

Flores expressed her love for helping people and stated that her door is open anytime for those who need a helping hand. She was up front about the person she is and knows what she could bring to the table if elected.

“If the people vote me in, they know what they are getting. I will not be up there just to be called a City Council member. That has a lot of responsibility attached to it,” said Flores. “You are up there to do what is best for the community and if that's what makes me the best candidate to be there, then I am the best candidate to be there.”
