The Halloween spirit shone through at Alta Vista School District all day long Wednesday with a pumpkin patch, a costume parade and trick-or-treating.

“Welcome to the Alta Vista Costume Parade,” said Vanessa Reilly, English teacher and Activities Director as she greeted audience members waiting to see the adorable costumes. “Let’s hear it, middle school and parents!”

Students grabbed their chairs from their classroom to sit around the basketball courts as the 430 kindergartners to fifth grade students lined up to march at the annual Halloween Costume Parade.

As the elementary students walked around the basketball courts, the middle school students cheered for them and parents standing along the sides of the courts looked for their children in their costumes.

The Rockin’ Vista Band, composed of the school’s music teacher, Superintendent Robert Hudson and middle school teachers entertained costume-clad kids and the crowd alike with their music.

“It is absolutely adorable, all these babies. They are the cutest,” said Leslie Tompains, who said this was her first year seeing her grandson be part of the parade. “Maybe for some kids this is all they get for Halloween, and Alta Vista went all-out by making the pumpkin patch and giving every student a pumpkin. That is awesome.”

The day full of activities for lucky students began early in the morn-

ing with a visit to the pumpkin patch said Reilly.

“Student council made it possible for every student to have their own pumpkin,” explained Reilly. “They had to guess how many candy corn there were in a jar, guess how many pumpkin seeds would be in a pumpkin, and we had a writing activity and took class pictures.”

Parents and family members watched the kids walk around the

basketball courts to show off their awesome costumes. They made a total of four rounds around the courts before being directed by their teacher to go trick-or-treating from class to class.

“My son dressed up as Batman,” said Teresa Flores as she watched her son make the rounds from class to class. “This is the second time he has been part of the parade, and he gets super excited about it.”

Thanks to the student council's fundraising efforts, they were able to provide every preschool through fifth grade student with a pumpkin, said Reilly.

“This is amazing,” said Reilly. “We hope that they have a great Halloween.”
